User Interface Engineer IV
Requirements
The User Experience group at Bose is looking for world-class user interface / interaction designers to help us create our next generation of easy to use, elegant, high-performance personal and home entertainment products. Your job will be to create desirable and practical design solutions through a process of user research, user modeling, concept synthesis, and detail refinement. You will work closely with engineering, program management, marketing, industrial design, graphic design, usability to ensure a superior user experience.
We are looking for designers who believe that human goals and desires should be the driving force behind technological and design innovation, but who can at the same time work pragmatically within real-world constraints and solve detailed interface problems within a cross-functional, collaborative work environment.
Responsibilities include:
Work with user researchers and product marketing to plan, coordinate, and conduct user research and analysis to determine target users and goals for product design efforts
Develop user interface/interaction design concepts/frameworks based on user research and analysis
Develop detailed interaction architecture in support of new and continuing product development efforts
Define and generate layouts for the controls, displays, and back panels for consumer and professional media products
Work closely with industrial designers, graphic designers, and usability specialists to ensure superior ease of use of new products
Work closely with advanced development and the model shop to develop detailed prototypes for evaluation of product design concepts
Work closely with product marketing and product development to understand business and technical concerns and constraints
Mentor junior members of the User Interface Design staff
Work with technical writers to produce detailed design documentation in formats suitable for use by design, engineering, SQA, and marketing stakeholders
Supervise and coordinate the integration of product graphics pertinent to user interactions to ensure consistency with product and experience design strategy
Collaborate with software engineering to ensure the successful execution of user interface designs and the preservation of design intent in the final product
Work with user documentation to ensure that the product design is accurately and clearly described for the target users
Develop design concepts which reflect technical or business constraints with minimal impact to the overall design intent and strategy
Additional Lead responsibilities/skills include:
Coordinate, with UI Manager, the allocation of projects and resources in the User Interface Design Group
Lead the execution of large, complex projects including creating and maintaining the high-level design, allocating resources, developing internal schedules and deliverables, and reporting progress to UI and UE Managers
Provide direct, daily direction to UI designers, graphic designers, technical writers and design developers
With UI Manager, oversee group infrastructure and workflow improvements (e.g. asset production pipelines, prototyping platforms, etc.)
Work with UI and UE Managers to develop and implement strategic design initiatives
Participate in annual performance evaluation process for junior designers
Skills
5+ years of digital product interaction/UI design (consumer or otherwise) preferred.
World-class creative, aesthetic and concept development skills
Strong analytical and process-oriented problem-solving skills
Excellent visual (sketches, storyboards, wire frames, screen mockups, flow diagrams, etc.), verbal, and written communication and presentation skills
Ability to function successfully in a fast-paced, collaborative, cross-functional team environment
Solid understanding of the product development process, including meeting the needs of business, software, hardware, and quality assurance
Proficiency with drawing and image manipulation (e.g.: Illustrator, Photoshop, Visio, PowerPoint, etc.)
Proficiency with a user interface prototyping tool (Flash, Director, Visual Basic) preferred
Familiarity with ethnography, ergonomics, anthropometrics, biomechanics, and other human factors / usability concepts and methods preferred
A solid portfolio of past work
Experience managing/coordinating design teams preferred
Education
EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
A Bachelor's degree in Industrial Design, Graphic Design, Behavioral Sciences, Human Factors/Ergonomics, Computer Science, User Interface/Interaction Design or related field is required; Master's degree strongly preferred.
