VP-R&D

Paragon Medsystems, a leading contract developer and manufacturer of complex medical devices and laboratory instruments, is seeking a seasoned, energetic leader to take over management of our R&D group.




We develop leading-edge instrumentation for both early-stage ventures as well as established companies.  Recent projects include a laser-based stroke treatment device, cardiac cooling system, artificial liver device, RFID-based drug  tracking system, DNA
sequencing instrument, liposuction instrument, aneurysm treatment device, electrosurgery system and an ultrasonic therapy device.  Our client base includes NuVasive, PhotoThera, Boston Scientific, Sequenom, Smith &  Nephew, InnerCool, Zoll
Medical, Vital Therapies and many others.

This position reports directly to the CEO.  As VP of R&D, you will:


Manage a department of approximately 10 individuals (engineers and technicians), and assist in growing the department to approximately 20-25 individuals over the next 18 months
Provide oversight of all active development projects to ensure project managers consistently meet customers’ expectations within desired time frames and budgets, and maintain compliance with ISO and FDA design control guidelinesMaximize departmental profitability

Mentor engineers and staff members to help grow from within more effective technical performers and project managersReview R&D staff members and recommend compensation adjustments, bonuses, disciplinary actions or staff reductionsAssist in soliciting new business, including meeting with potential customers, estimating development costs, and writing technical portions of project proposals Ensure that adequate resources are available to
the project load, including recruiting and managing outside consultantsAssist in organizing the machine shop and R&D labs
to optimize accessibility of test equipment, parts and other shared resources


The ideal candidate will have at least ten years of experience managing electronic product development projects, 3-5 years of which involved medical product development.  A working knowledge of medical electronics, software development, mechanical engineering, fluidics and photonics is strongly desired.  BS or equivalent in engineering is required.  MS or MBA a plus.
