Salary:
Energy Trading Specialist (Entry): $52,464-$$65,520 annually
Energy Trading Specialist (Intermediate): $$65,520-$81,780 annually
Energy Trading Specialist (Journey): $$83,820-$104,652 annually
To reliably procure, schedule and manage the District's wholesale energy requirements to serve our customer/owners. This will include optimizing resourcesby dispatching the generation plants, scheduling water flows and making sales of surplus resources. All business transactions follow the District's risk parameters and ethical business practices.
Essential Functions:
POWER TRADING
1) Forecast customer energy requirements considering historical demands, applicable load shapes, and weather projections.
2) Evaluate market conditions, generating plant limitations (hydroelectric and thermal), maintenance, outages, transmission ratings and curtailments, and existing contract provisions.
4) Determine resource costs and availability considering existing market conditions, generating plant limitations (both hydroelectric and thermal), maintenance, outages, transmission ratings and curtailments, and existing contract provisions.
5) Manage resources to meet NERC/WSCC reliability criteria during all operating conditions.
6) Utilize various market applications,including but not limited to, the APX, CAPX, and CISO applications to submit capacity, energy, transmission, and ancillary service bids.
7) Negotiate purchases and sales of energy, capacity, ancillary services andthe purchase of transmission to meet load and District objectives.
8) Conduct economic analysis ofcurrent resource options and market opportunities.
9) Negotiate financial contracts.
10) Determine optimal short-term use of existing power purchase contracts based on market information.
POWER SCHEDULING
1) Develop and submit schedules based on contract requirements and prudent economics to ensure the timely flow of SMUD power resources.
2) Determine fuel purchase requirements based on resource dispatch.
3) Coordinate: Energy, capacity, transmission, and ancillary service transactions with the appropriate broker, marketer, utility, generator, scheduling coordinator, and/or control area.
4) Create and/or assess all electronic tags pursuant to NERC Policy 3 and WSCC Business Practices.
5) Ensure that we meet NERC/WSCC reliability criteria.
6) Utilize various market applications, includingbut not limited to the APX, CAPX, and CISO applications to submit capacity, energy, transmission, and ancillary service schedule.
7) Develop and maintain harmonious operations with electric trading partners and other District stakeholders through the use of effective communication practices.
Minimum Qualifications:

ENERGY TRADING SPECIALIST (ENTRY/INTERMEDIATE LEVELS):
General understanding of normal business practices and ethical behavior; general understanding of computers and programs such as Excel, Word, Access and PowerPoint; understanding of basic contract principles; understanding of basic financial statements; and, understanding of basic economic analysis.
ENERGY TRADING SPECIALIST (JOURNEY LEVEL) - POWER TRADING: General understanding of the wholesale and retail electric utility business; general understanding of generation resources; forecasting customer energy requirements; hydro reservoir monitoring for optimum UARP dispatch; market applications, including but not limited to the APX, ICE and CISO; weather forecasting on a day-ahead basis; Real-Time trading procedures and strategies for energy capacity, transmission and/or ancillary services; Real-Time pre-schedule evaluation and optimization procedures for generation dispatch, capacity needs, energy, transmission and ancillary services purchases and sales; principles of power generation and transmission systems, including interconnected utility operations; production costs of energy by fuel type; system load characteristics and load curves; integration of purchases and sales to economically reduce overall costs of energy; energy management systems; NERC Policies and WSCC Business Practices; and, principles and techniques of contract management.
ENERGY TRADING SPECIALIST (JOURNEY LEVEL) - POWER SCHEDULING: General understanding of the wholesale and retail electric utility business; general understanding of generation resources; scheduling and tagging procedures based on WECC and contract requirements; scheduling Coordinator reporting requirements including, Intertie, CISO, and SMUD Contracts.

ENERGY TRADING SPECIALIST (ENTRY/INTERMEDIATE LEVELS): Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships internally and externally; utilize a personal computer and/or computer terminal, systems and software relevant to the job; to work on multiple projects with multiple deadlines; and, ability to research, analyze and resolve problems.
ENERGY TRADING SPECIALIST (JOURNEY LEVEL) - POWER TRADING: Negotiate transactions, with a magnitude in the millions of dollars; interpret and explain complex contracts, policies, protocols, and business practices; develop strategies associated with short-term trading; develop and implement trading procedures; develop systems to track and analyze capacity, energy, transmission, and ancillary service transactions; develop market strategies for wholesale purchases and sales; and, implement relevant trading directives from management.
ENERGY TRADING SPECIALIST (JOURNEY LEVEL) - POWER SCHEDULING: Make schedule transactions; solve problems relating to system scheduling conflicts; interpret and explain complex contracts, policies, protocols,and business practices; develop and implement scheduling procedures; and, implement relevant trading directives from management.
[EXPERIENCE:]
ENERGY TRADING SPECIALIST (ENTRY/INTERMEDIATE LEVELS): Entry level does not require prior experience, however, a BA in Business, Economics, Engineering or related field is desired. Intermediate level typically requires three to five years experience working in an area such as; Energy Trading/Scheduling, Business Resource Planning, System Operations and Reliability, Energy Risk Management, or an area in the utility industry directly related to energy trading.
ENERGY TRADING SPECIALIST (JOURNEY LEVEL) - POWER TRADING: A minimum of three (3) total years experience as an Energy Trading Specialist (Entry/Intermediate) in a related District area, or, a minimum of three (3) total years minimum or equivalent work experience outside the District in a relevant area of the utility industry.
Desirable Qualifications:
BA in Business, Economics, Engineering or related field is desireable.
