About the Opportunity This position, which may be located in Akron, OH - Erie, PA or Reading, PA, is accountable to provide field engineering services and technical support for the maintenance, construction, testing, and commissioning of substation equipment up to and including 500kV. Must have the ability to apply engineering skills in: Identifying and resolving substation technical problems; initiate corrective action to reduce or eliminate equipment failures; develop maintenance practices; write technical reports; troubleshoot substation problems; recommend solutions to problems that include analysis of risks, costs and benefits. Must be able to work independently and in unison with others including regional and plant personnel as well as other departments/sections and outside vendors. A willingness to travel throughout the FirstEnergy system including periodic overnight stays; and direct and train other employees. PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES - Proficiency in the use of standard electrical test equipment and methods to troubleshoot and commission electrical equipment in substations and power plants. - Types of equipment including but are not limited to protective relaying and control schemes, power transformers, distribution and EHV breakers, and mobile substations, etc. - Proficiency in the use of various technical software packages including but not limited to Doble Protest and DTA, SEL 5010, and SEL 5601. Also develop skills in the use of administrative software such as SAP, and Microsoft Office products. - Skilled in the understanding, application, and communication of microprocessor based protective schemes. - Analyze data, including test, inspection reports, and misoperation reports. - Analyze moderate to complex technical problems and exercise effective decision making skills. - Write technical reports including root cause analysis equipment failures. - Make technical presentations. - Support of substation asset management. - Strong mechanical and relaying and controls aptitude. - Prepare substation practice and procedures in the maintenance and performance of substation equipment. - Review equipment test and inspection reports and make recommendation to correct deficiencies. - Travel to substations throughout the FirstEnergy System work in the field to support regional and power plant personnel. - Work overtime as required, including occasional weekends and holidays - Make recommendations on the maintenance/procurement practices. - Work safely in the office and the field.
Qualifications
Required
Bachelor or Masters of Science degree in Electrical Engineering.
Minimum of two years experience as an Assistant/Associate Engineer or equivalent experience.
A Professional Engineers (PE) License or qualified work experience is preferred for Advanced Engineer position.
Strong PC skills to include Microsoft Office applications and WEB software.
Strong organizational skills.
Excellent interpersonal skills and a commitment to customer satisfaction.
Strong oral and written communication skills.
Must be able to analyze complex technical problems and exercise sound judgment.
Willingness to train and assist others.
Must drive projects and tasks to completions by working in the field with the regional substation physical workforce.
Must be able to work extended hours.
Must be able to handle multiple assignments.
Must be willing to travel including overnight travel.
With training, must be able to work independently and direct others in the maintenance and support of all substation equipment.
Relay and controls background and/or experience.
Strong major substation equipment background and/or experience.
