Mechanic/ Industrial Mechanic/ Large Bore Engine Mechanic
General Information
The Sandwich Operating Area of TransCanada's ANR Pipeline Company requires a Mechanical technician to work at the New Windsor Compressor Station and surrounding area. Based in New Windsor, IL the successful candidate will work on a team that operates and maintains a high pressure natural gas pipeline system, a reciprocating engine-driven compressor station, gas measurement facilities, microwave communication systems, and other related facilities. This position is overtime eligible and extended work hours including nights and weekends may be required on occasion without advance notice.
Responsibilities
The primary duties associated with this position include:
- Plan, coordinate and perform mechanical maintenance activities, including routine corrective maintenance, preventive maintenance, equipment and system improvements and major maintenance projects.
- Troubleshoot, operate and maintain gas-fired large-bore reciprocating engines and gas compressors, standby generators engines, centrifugal & diaphragm pumps, low pressure boilers, oil coolers, air compressors, large-bank cooler fans & gear boxes, large diameter valves & operators, and other auxiliary equipment.
- Perform full or partial large-bore reciprocating engine/gas compressor overhauls, including heads, pistons, rings, liners, pins, bushing, and bearings.
- Perform mechanical modifications and equipment improvements as necessary to maximize production and reliability
- Perform precision measurement and alignment functions
- Analyze engine performance reports, initiate corrective action to review and improve maintenance procedures
- Participate in the establishment and achievement of plant operational objectives.
Additional duties include:
- Perform on-site inspections, processing and documentation of encroachments on pipeline easements.
- Participate in a formal on-call rotation.
- Perform emergency preparedness duties.
- Be able to occasionally work out of town to support Sandwich Area operations and maintenance activities [typically less than 25%].
- Ensure facilities and vehicles are maintained and operated safely in compliance with TransCanada's Health, Safety, and Environmental standards.
- Utilize effective planning/scheduling techniques in conjunction with TransCanada's Work Management processes.
- Utilize automated maintenance systems (Avantis) to generate work orders and enter appropriate technical findings and issue technical reports as required.
- Supervise and coordinate third party contractors.
- Provide expertise as related to other relevant disciplines within TransCanada (eg. Measurement, Pipeline, Automation, etc).
- Provide coaching, mentoring and training to other technicians.
Qualifications and Education
Required:
- Associates degree including courses in engine mechanics required. -Equivalent work experience may be considered in lieu of education.
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting, computer and decision making skills
- Strong organizational skills with excellent written and verbal communication skills - Ability to work in a team environment with minimal supervision
- Must have a strong safety attitude and be environmentally responsible
- Must have and maintain a valid drivers license
- Manual dexterity and visual acuity as well as the ability to: lift, pull, push and carry up to 50 pounds; exert up to 100 pounds of physical force; stand, walk, kneel, bend, and squat for extended periods of time; twist head and back for extended period of time; work in areas classified as confined space; climb and work from ladders, catwalks, staging, and platforms; ascend and descend slopes and ditches; work with hands above head; work lying on back; work in adverse weather conditions
An Asset:
- Experience in maintaining and troubleshooting large-bore reciprocating engines preferred
- Relevant oil and gas industry experience would be an asset
- Industrial experience in a plant environment would be an asset
- The ability to read, interpret, and modify blue prints and alignment sheets a plus
