Rio Tinto Minerals (RTM), is currently hiring for a Senior Financial Accountant support the Finance team from their Denver, Colorado global head office. This role will provide analytical support for business development, financial margins, productivity, costs and oversee the financial and management reporting for the borate, salt and talc departments regionally and globally.

RTM is the acknowledged world leader in developing industrial minerals – building blocks for life, and for products that contribute to better living – and in developing solutions to build customers’ businesses. RTM operates globally and includes two businesses in the United States: Rio Tinto Borax and Luzenac. Rio Tinto Borax supplies nearly half of the global demand for refined borates - key ingredients for fiberglass, glass, ceramics, fertilizers, wood preservatives, and hundreds of other products. Luzenac supplies 25% of the global demand for talc, employing approximately 1500 people on four continents.
The Financial Reporting Team is responsible for the collection, consolidation, IFRS and presentation of the company’s global finances. This includes creation of monthly, quarterly, and yearly financial statements and analyses as well as reporting budget and forecast financial statements with variance analysis. Presentation of these data is both upstream to the London headquarters as well as internally for management reporting. The Team is also responsible for ad hoc reporting and analyses. Additional responsibilities include regular reporting and analysis of SG&A spend to departmental vice presidents.
The successful candidate will be able to:
Produce financial reports in a timely and accurate fashion
Prepare and deliver key business indicators to London consistent with IFRS reporting
Inform management of the financial health and performance of the company
Prepare and track financial budgets and forecasts
Complete general management reporting of key business information and communicate this to senior management.
Contribute to the success of the continuous planning initiative
Contribute to the financial consolidation, reporting, and presentation of Rio Tinto’s borates, talc, and salt businesses on a regional and global basis in a timely and accurate fashion.
Perform financial analysis for key decisions throughout the operations, including analysis of margins, costs, productivity, capital expenditures, transfer pricing, and manpower levels.
Provide critical analysis of variances against plan and forecast on a monthly, quarterly, half-year and annual basis for the Americas region and for global RTM reporting to London.
Participate in aligning regional finance processes and ensures coordination with other support functions, operations, logistics and commercial groups.
Embrace and support compliance oriented culture and processes.
Contribute to the overall RTM and regional strategy, and supports strategy through analytical work
Contribute to providing timely and accurate ad hoc reporting and analysis of finance related data for senior management.
Assist management in understanding financial performance and in identifying areas for improvement
Participate and support collaborate forums with other regional finance leaders.
The qualified candidate will possess the following credentials and characteristics:
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or other related field is required with a preference for a CPA or MBA.
6-10 years of relevant experience in a corporate financial setting or mining company
Exposure to financial reporting, monthly/quarterly reporting, and financial analysis preferred with a strong understanding of accounting practices
Ability to understand financial practices and business processes
Excellent analytical skills and the capacity to translate the needs of the finance community.
Exhibit critical thinking skills that promote implementing value-adding ideas and concepts. Comfortable with supporting organizational change.
Excellent interpersonal skills, including ability to work and communicate with peers.
Build strong collaborative relationships with business partners.
Ability to work effectively across departmental and organizational boundaries
