Incidences of equipment failures can indicate an emerging issue that warrants further EPRI investigation for R&D planning, and provides members with objective information from which to make O&M decisions.EPRI is the R&D force for the global electric power industry. This includes competitive pay, insurance coverage, and a retirement plan that is good for people in early or mid-career. Job Function:Work with member organizations, identify current and emerging technical issues related to equipment reliabilityDevelop collaborative R&D projects around critical needsAssist in the development and implementation of strategies for all Major Component Reliability, O&M and Combustion Turbine program areas to improve industry reliability and cost effectivenessCommunicate strategies and results, written and verbal, with program membership and potential membersSupport the creation of a multiyear research plan to meet technical and financial goals Ensure high quality R&D results are delivered on schedule and budgetManage research contractors; prepare contract documents; develop contractor budgetsSupport two program advisory and Council meetings per yearSupport other Technical Executives, Senior Program Managers, Senior Project Managers, and Directors as neededThe anticipated role that the Failure Analysis expert fulfills include:Field fact finding: working with our customers to determine whether a certain failure incident is unique or represents a broader risk exposureFirst response: help to rapidly assemble a first response to a major incidentRoot cause investigation:  develop and manage an investigation team that looks beyond the initial failure mechanism to determine the actual root cause and possible solutions.  Work with respective EPRI equipment programs to form R&D initiatives for re-occurring failuresApplication of EPRI Background:  assist utilities in identifying and applying relevant EPRI backgroundThe Ideal Candidate: Possess an understanding of power plant equipment and system level design and operation, in depth knowledge of typical materials of construction including those used in combustion turbine/combined cycle plants, static and dynamic loads, knowledge of stress and fracture analysis using advanced tools (e.g., ANSYS), and typical equipment degradation and failure mechanisms. Demonstrate skills at consensus building to develop research project ideas involving a broad range of constituentsPossess exceptional skills at report writing and technical presentationsProven skills in managing large and complex projectsTeam player willing to cooperate and coordinate with other technical staffEducation Level and Years of ExperienceBachelor of Science, Engineering (Materials, Mechanical Engineering, or Chemical engineering), advanced degree being desirableAt least 10 years of relevant experience dealing with failure analysis of plant equipment and systems Export Control Statement: In order to ensure compliance with U.S. export controls, EPRI must determine the citizenship status of all prospective applicants.
