Seminole Electric Cooperative Inc. is a generation and transmission cooperative located in Tampa, Florida. Approximately 1.6 million individuals and businesses in 46 of Florida's 67 counties rely on Seminole and its 10 member distribution systems for their electric power. Robust population growth in Florida and particularly in Seminole's service territory will require the addition of more than 4,000 MW of new generating capability over the next decade, based on current forecasts. Our coal-fueled, 1300 megawatt Seminole Generating Station is located in Putnam County and was put into commercial service in 1984. The Payne Creek station, located in Hardee County, is a 500 megawatt combined cycle plant that uses natural gas as its primary fuel source.

Seminole Electric Cooperative, Inc. currently has a System Coordinator position open at its Tampa, Florida headquarters. 

Position Summary:

 

To control SECI's generating units and transmission system so as to provide reliable and economical energy to its member cooperatives while supporting the integrity of Florida's power grid in accordance with national and regional standards.

 

Essential Functions:

 

1. Familiarity with power system metering practices, system protection, demand, and energy accounting procedures and the use of SCADA systems for power system control.  Must be thoroughly familiar with FRCC and NERC and (or subsequent organizations) operating reliability standards, policies and procedures.

2. Comply with all reliability standards applicable to system operations.

3. Insures the safe and proper operation of all transmission switching operations and clearance procedures.

4. Controls all generating units and purchase power contract resources such that Seminole's responsibilities to the interconnected grid and transmission providers are fulfilled.

5. Provides quick and safe restoration of service following system disturbances.

6. Takes action in emergency conditions to maintain the security of the interconnected grid and Seminole facilities.  Such action may include interruption of firm customer loads.

7. Maintains balanced load and generation in accordance with principles of economic dispatch and system reliability.

 

Minimum Requirements:

 

An Associate Degree in electrical technology or the equivalent training is required.

 

Five (5) years in power systems operations, including transmission switching and clearance procedures, generating plant control, and interconnected system operations is required.

 

Must establish and retain applicable NERC Certified System Operator status.  Ability to make reasonable decisions based on limited information during times of extreme stress.  Ability to perform complex calculations concerning unit heat rate, energy cost and power factors.  Must be able to carry out complex verbal instructions.  Must be able to maintain a harmonious relationship with dispatchers both within the company and those of neighboring utilities.  Must be able to react to constantly changing work conditions with a very high degree of accuracy.  Ability to analyze problems within the power system or its control equipment and communicate such to their respective support personnel.

 

Subject to being called to work at any time.  Must work rotating shifts and some holidays.  Normal office conditions. Routine hands-on work with electrical control and indication systems.  Will be required to work alone in a defined area. Occasional overnight travel to other locations may be required.
