Air Resources Engineer OR Air Pollution Specialist-GGTFTS
About the Opportunity The California Air Resources Board uses the highest quality scientific information and research possible to protect the health of the people and the environment of California. Much of this research is conducted internally at the Board, but the Research Division also maintains a large extramural research portfolio. Within the Research Division, the Greenhouse Gas Technology and Field Testing Section conducts field studies and other activities to support the Board's regulatory programs. These include the ongoing Harbor Communities Monitoring Study and the Innovative Clean Air Technologies (ICAT) program. It also plays a critical role in implementing the California Global Warming Solutions Act of 2006 (AB32) with responsibilities for greenhouse gas emission inventory evaluation, technology advancement, geologic carbon sequestration issues, and several "early actions" approved by the Board last June to realize early and substantial greenhouse gas emissions reductions in the state. This section is developing and deploying three mobile air quality monitoring platforms, as well as other monitoring tools, to characterize community exposures to air pollutants and to verify California's greenhouse gas emission inventory. These tools will help to inform decision-makers on where exposures of greatest concern occur as well as opportunities for mitigation, and may also help to reveal or identify significant local sources of greenhouse gases. Working independently and under the guidance and supervision of the Section Manager, the incumbent will conduct field testing, technical analysis, provides expert opinions to decision-makers, manage extramural research, network with national and international stakeholders, and publish research finding.
Qualifications
The most competitive candidates will have a strong science or technical background and knowledge of climate change, as well as experience with the functions and procedures of the agency or willingness to learn and execute them. Other essential job requirements include excellent written and verbal communication skills, ability to work effectively and cooperatively with a diverse stakeholder group including the public, other government agencies, and research organizations, and strong interpersonal and leadership skills. The ability to work proactively and efficiently on multiple projects with strict deadlines is expected.
The most desirable qualifications include an educational background in science or engineering with general or specific knowledge of climate change, air quality, emissions, clean air technology, and regulatory development. The qualified applicants must have a strong desire for making original and sustained contributions to the mission of the ARB. You should also be a motivated team player with an enthusiastic attitude and the dedication to work hard on one of the most important issues of our time.
