Assistant Dean, for Academic Programs and Advising, Office of Minority Education

ASSISTANT DEAN FOR ACADEMIC PROGRAMS AND ADVISING, OFFICE OF MINORITY EDUCATION, Dean for Undergraduate Education-Office of Minority Education (OME), to initiate and support efforts to develop effective academic enrichment and support programs for MIT undergraduates, with primary focus on underrepresented minority students (African-American, Native American, Mexican-American, and Puerto Rican). Will be responsible for providing direction, oversight, and advocacy for academic and cultural programs assisting underrepresented minority students' transition to the rigors of the Institute during the upperclass years; coordinating and developing effective academic programs to support students' academic success; advising upperclass students on an array of academic, personal, and career concerns; directing the Laureates and Leaders Program which prepares undergraduates for graduate studies; supervising program coordinator on an array of programs designed to foster academic success and facilitate leadership development; serving as a liaison to the five schools and undergraduate departments; facilitating strong working relationships with student groups and student support offices; conducting follow-up on the academic progress of students through their undergraduate years; overseeing the application process and approval of student organizational grants; contributing content to office publications; and providing other support as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS: a bachelor's degree (master's preferred); at least three years of progressive experience in education or higher education administration; fluency in Spanish; considerable administrative experience in student-oriented organizations; and excellent interpersonal, organizational, supervisory, and oral and written communication skills. Preference will be given to those with experience working with diverse minority populations, particularly Latino populations, preferably in higher education. A commitment to minority student education and knowledge of the factors and influences that impact the lives of minorities in higher education preferred. MIT-00005335-P 4/29/08
