Data Network Engineer

Data Network Engineer

Role Definition: 

Administer sophisticated Local Area Network and Wide Area Data Networks to meet business needs and requirements.



Dimension:

1. Responsible for recommending cost-justified expenditures to meet Iowa Telecom’s corporate and Internet Service Provider networking needs.

2. No direct reports but would be a mentor to co-workers and should be able to assume a leadership role when called upon

3. No direct budget responsibility.



Organizational Relationships:

1. Interface with various System Administrators to ensure adequate, security, performance, and availability of corporate and ISP networked systems.

2. Interface with System Analysts and developers on proper methods and procedures to access and transfer data across the network.

3. Interface with vendors and contractors as required to address problems, identify future requirements, and to anticipate future vendor technology offerings. 

4. Interface with other departments as necessary to coordinate activities for installation, maintenance, and trouble resolution.



Principal Accountabilities:

1. Design and implement sophisticated corporate and ISP data network requirements

2. Establish standards and implement procedures necessary to maintain network performance, security, and reliability.

3. Monitor performance of corporate and ISP networks and make recommendations to management related to procurement of network administration tools and new products that would enhance our ability to better support all networks.

4. Evaluate reported problems and implement satisfactory solutions to resolve complex network issues and prevent recurrence.

5. Coach and train other staff on proper use and administration of network equipment and management tools.

6. Work effectively and professionally with other team members, co-workers in other departments and external customers.

7. Willing to work schedules that are outside normal business hours to support department and business data networking needs and goals.

8. Be on-call 24X7 to support business critical data networks.

Position Qualifications:

(A). Required Education  

CCNP Preferred

Minimum of 4 to 8 years hands on experience

 

Desired Education 

  B.S. in Computer Science / Engineering

  CCNP or CCNP in progress

 

(B). Required Work Experience

1. 4 years minimum experience maintaining complex data network operations

2. Prior experience performing network design for maximum performance and availability

3. Hands-on experience configuring Cisco routers and switches, ATM aggregations devices and other network equipment in a multi-location or campus corporate environment

4. Prior experience supporting and grooming Internet Service Provider backbone networks

5. Highly skilled at IP planning and allocation

6.  Prior experience with EIGRP, BGP and OSPF routing protocols

7.  Prior experience with Cisco Pix / ANA or similar network security devices



 

(C).  Required Skills or traits for the position

1. Excellent attention to detail

2.  Excellent verbal and listening skills

3.  Willingness to share knowledge / coach co-workers on various network technologies

4.  Self starter – ability to initiate and start tasks that are required

5.  Ability to handle interruptions and distractions successfully; multi-tasking

6.  Ability to document existing facilities and proposed changes to the network

7.  Willingness to adapt in an ever-changing environment

8.  Project management experience is required
