Alliant Techsystems (ATK)-Tactical Propulsion and Controlshas a challenging opportunity for aDesign Engineer (Solid Rocket Motor/Propulsion) in Elkton, MD. This Division ofATK specializes in the production of tactical propulsion systems and composite metal structures.TheDesign Engineer will define, lead, and create a rocket propulsion or system development program and/or support senior staff as part of the proposal orthe design development team. The incumbent will be responsible for acting as the technical lead with PM, Analysis, Quality, Drafting, Testing, and other departments. This position will develop detailed multi-discipline technical plans for propulsion systems.The Design Engineer will develop program contentcommensurate with program funding profiles, coordinate scope, and estimates for conducting tasks with functional organizations. Responsibilities include monitoring andreporting progress against plans; understanding causes;reporting schedule and cost variances; and developing mitigation plans. The Design Engineer willperform preliminary and detailed design of propulsion systems, subsystems, and components including propellant grain sizing, internal and external ballistic analysis, vessel sizing, insulator sizing usinganalysis, nozzle and igniter design, valve and actuator sizing, ordinance and S&A selection. The incumbent will design and develop components/subassemblies/assemblies using 2D and 3D IDEAS CAD or similar software for solid rocket motor and control (valve) systems according to customer requirements. The Design Engineer will also assist the customer in defining these requirements in the preliminary design phase. Responsibilities include applying existing IR&D and other new technologies to develop low risk and novel propulsion concepts and providing consulting engineering support in areas of expertise to funded programs on an as needed basis related to internal/external peers, concept, critical design, and test readiness reviews.Requirements:BSME or BSAE is required.MSME or MSAE is preferred. Minimum of 2 years professional engineering design experience working with solid rocket motors or propulsion products. Candidates should have strong engineering and interpersonal skills necessary to lead a team to develop or produce a SRM or propulsion product. Candidates must be capable of specifying required analyses, defining quality and mission assurance, and evaluating risk and mitigation. Strong CAD and component design experience. Candidates should have a background in manufacturing and producibility of SRMs and control systems or similar products. Excellent presentation and writing skills are required.
