Part-time (Hourly) Engineering Technician position to assist with drilling activities.

DUTIES:  This position will be performing some combination of the following duties: assists driller with operating drilling equipment and support vehicles in a safe and efficient manner.  Performs preparatory tasks including (but not limited to):  weighing and washing moisture jars; restocking suport trucks with testing supplies; cleaning and refueling equipment (such as chains saws, pumps, etc.).  Assists in the creation of clear and concise boring logs.  Assists with accurately locating borings on plans and in the field. utility clearance procedures and setting up traffic control zones by placement of signs, etc.  Assists drill crew chief in gaining site access by clearing brush, removing guardrail, etc.   

QUALIFICATIONS: Demonstrated ability to interpret and follow instructions; to read and interpret plans and survey data.  Experience with accurate identification of soil and rock.  Diligent worker with strength and positive attitude to perform labor – intensive work using mechanical drilling equipment.  Experience with operating and maintaining mechanical drilling equipment.  Demonstrated accuracy in recording field data, writing reports and mathematical computations. Working knowledge of highway materials sampling and testing procedures and guidelines.  Working knowledge of soil and rock sampling and testing procedures.  Demonstrated ability to cooperate productively and direct other workers.  Must be willing to occasionally travel overnight and work overtime as needed.  Must be willing to work outdoors under possible adverse weather conditions. Valid Driver’s License required and Commercial Driver’s license must be obtained within 6 months of hire. DMV Check and Pre Employment Physical with Drug Screen will be conducted.  VDOT Materials certifications in Soil & Aggregate, ; Flagger Certification and 40-hour OSHA HAZWOPER or ability to obtain these certifications within 12 months of hire.  Safety shoes required. Graduation from High School and / or combination of education, training, and experience demonstrating the ability to perform the position duties. 

NOTE:  This is an hourly wage position which is limited to 1500 hours in a 365 day period.  No State benefits are available.
