Engineer Technician (D11524)

- - (SALARY NON-EXEMPT UNION POSITION)PURPOSE:The duties of a technician in the Operations area of the Detroit Diesel Engineering Laboratory may encompass a wide range of responsibilities related to the testing, and documentation of test results, of medium and heavy-duty diesel engines, their components and exhaust after-treatment systems. These include engine assembly and disassembly, test cell and/or durability booth operation, problem identification and troubleshooting, test cell engine and after-treatment setups, including any necessary fabrication, component test fixture assembly and operation, and component measurements. Good interpersonal skills are required, as interfacing with personnel from other engineering laboratory groups, DD product groups and outside vendors during the course of a normal workday are highly probable. REQUIREMENTS:1. Ability to work with minimum direct supervision. 2. Ability to work with hand tools to perform assembly and disassembly of medium and heavy-duty diesel engines.3. Methodically troubleshoot and identify problems with engines and test cell equipment.4. Operate test cells running medium and heavy-duty diesel engines and aftertreatment systems.5. Operate the Durability Booth simultaneously running a number of engines.6. Perform fabrication as necessary to complete test cell engine and aftertreatment setups. 7. Measurement of diesel engine components using various tools and equipment.8. Assemble and operate fixtures that test diesel engine components.9. Ability to follow Lab operating processes and safety requirements. SUPPLEMENTAL REQUIREMENTS:1. Implement company and departmental quality goals.2. Assist the test facility management in maintaining a clean and safe work area.3. Assist test facilities personnel and customers in resolving testing and measurement problems. BASIC QUALIFICATIONS (REQUIRED):1. A two-year associates degree in mechanical, automotive or engine-related studies preferred.2. Strong knowledge in engine testing, and/or engine assembly and disassembly.3. Basic computer skills (spreadsheet, word processor, e-mail and Intranet).4. Mechanical and fabrication skills, and the ability to work with hand tools.5. Effective organizational and follow-up skills.6. Excellent interpersonal team skills and effective oral communication skills.7. Own tools required on the job.BASIC QUALIFICATIONS (PREFERRED):1. Experience working in the field of engine testing, preferably diesel engine testing.2. Experience working in an engineering laboratory.3. Knowledge of diesel engine design and operation.4. Have a Class A Commercial Drivers License for operation of Class 8 trucks and buses.WORKING CONDITIONS:The majority of time is spent in an environment associated with a large engine testing facility. Visits may be necessary to manufacturing areas, customer and supplier locations, and to the test facilities of regulatory agencies and/or outside contracted testing facilities. Periodic exposure to engines operating in laboratory, factory, or customer environments can be expected. Such exposure may include heat/cold, noise, vibration, grease, dirt, fumes, glycols, fuels, lube oils, and gases.PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Occasionally required to move engine components or test equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.Note: The above statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by employees assigned to the classification.
