The Department of Energy's Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility, or Jefferson Lab (JLab), is a basic research laboratory built to probe the nucleus of the atom to learn more about the quark structure of matter. The lab is managed and operated for the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Science by Jefferson Science Associates, LLC (JSA). JSA is a Southeastern Universities Research Association/Computer Sciences Corporation limited liability corporation created specifically to manage and operate Jefferson Lab.Jefferson Lab currently has an opening for an Environmental Monitoring Engineer.The Environmental Monitoring Engineer has direct oversight of the Radiological Control Division’s Environmental Monitoring program. Incumbent must define the scope of environmental sampling protocols and lead the effort in obtaining, analyzing, interpreting and reporting results for sample media. The incumbent provides data for regulatory and permit related reports. Specific duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to: * Resident Subject Matter Expert in matters of radiation protection of the environment (subcontractors and regulatory agencies interface). * Define sampling protocols to include: type, location, frequency and analysis methodology for environmental soil, surface water, well water and vegetation samples. * Design, install, and maintain equipment and sampling systems required to conduct environmental monitoring. * Perform environmental sampling alone or with assistance of RadCon technicians. Lead environmental sampling effort, ensure samples are obtained in a timely manner and in accordance with accepted environmental standards. * Provide design review support for building construction, system maintenance, reconfigurations that could potentially alter or impact the environment or sampling pathways. * Develop, write, review and revise procedures pertaining to Radiological Control Division’s environmental duties.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:BS/BA in Health Physics or other related field plus at least 3 years experience in environmental monitoring. Mechanical experience to include minor, mechanical, electrical, plumbing design and repair. Working knowledge of water hydrology and soil characteristics. Working knowledge of state and federal regulations associated with air and water quality. Familiarity with local statutes and permitting requirements. Knowledge of and experience in environmental sampling protocols and techniques. Familiarity with software and database design/maintenance. Analytical lab operational experience.
