Junior Engineers – Associate Program MTA Metro-North Railroad, an organization with a vital role in the economy of New York State and Connecticut, is a subsidiary agency of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), the largest such authority in the United States. The Associate Program (AP) is an MTA Metro-North Railroad program to identify and train talented, aspiring individuals for management positions in engineering. This Program is a twelve (12) month training program. We currently have the following openings in this program:
CIVIL OR MECHANICAL ENGINEER (2)RESPONSIBILITIES: The AP participant within the M of W - Track & Structures Department will be assigned diverse tasks focusing on management and technical skills development.
Perform analysis on specific maintenance and engineering topics. Assist in the management of Track & Structures maintenance and construction forces. Assist in managing the introduction of new technologies into the railroad that will improve safety, reduce operational expenses and improve operations. Participate in the design, layout and installation of track, switches, drainage, bridges and culverts. Participate in the development and management of operations and capital budgets. Keep abreast of changing technology as it applies to the Track & Structures systems. Perform duties of Assistant Supervisor Track & Structures including planning jobs, handling emergency calls and the operation of a sub-division. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Good written and oral communication skills. Good organizational skills with attention to details. Knowledge of MS Office Suite and/or other comparable PC applications. Ability to interact with internal/external customers and contractors. Basic understanding of engineering principles. Ability to work various days, shifts, and locations, including holidays and weekends. Must have a valid driver's license. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Working knowledge of CADD. Knowledge of transportation operations. REQUIRED EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or Mechanical Engineering or will have obtained such degree prior to employment date. ELECTRICAL ENGINEERRESPONSIBILITIES: The AP participant within the M of W - Power will be assigned diverse tasks focusing on management and technical skills development.
Become familiar with the daily operations of the Power system for Metro-North, its similarities to a utility or industrial system and its peculiarities which makes the Traction Power world unique. Understand what it means to be "ready" 24/7 both from a design / maintenance and emergency repair response standpoint. Assist in managing workload priority, determining risk analysis vs. political pressure. Assist in the development of operations and capital budgets and learn the various electrical systems and their application. Become familiar with various failure modes and their associated repair solutions. Assist in managing the selection and introduction of new technology systems into the department, which can improve efficiencies, reliabilities, and safety. Assist in the development of operations and capital budgets and learn the various methods for tracking. Keep abreast of changing technology in the power and control industries as they apply to the railroad industry. Shadow managers & supervisors to learn administrative responsibilities/tasks for union employees to include, communication, scheduling, assignments, attendance, mediation and discipline. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering and/or related Engineering discipline and/or will have obtained such degree prior to employment date.
ELECTRICAL ENGINEER (3)RESPONSIBILITIES: The AP participant within the M of W - Communications and Signals Department (C & S) will be assigned diverse tasks focusing on management and technical skills development.
Perform analysis on specific maintenance and engineering topics. Assist in the management of C &S maintenance and construction forces. Assist in managing the introduction of new technologies into the railroad that will improve safety, reduce operational expenses and improve operations. Assist in the engineering, design, and periodic maintenance of railroad communication systems. The latter includes public address, telephone PBX's, and fiber optic carrier equipment and distribution systems. Participate in the evaluation of railroad signal systems that include wayside control relays, microprocessors and grade crossing equipment and systems. Participate in the development and management of operations and capital budgets. Keep abreast of changing technology as it applies to the C & S systems. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
