SAIC: From Science to Solutions® The Homeland Protection & Preparedness Business Unit currently has an opening for a Mechanical Materials Engineer in the Research and Engineering Division at the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) Washington, DC. The candidate will be responsible for multi-field physics modeling of the rail and armature structure of an electromagnetic launching system. High temperature, electromagnetic fields, high voltage and structural material phase transformation are all physical aspects of the problem which must be addressed. Moreover, moving contact, wear and electrical contact boundary conditions need to be taken into account. The position will involve both basic research and analysis support for a laboratory-scale launcher. REQUIRED EDUCATION/SKILLS: PhD in Mechanical Engineering or closely related field with 2+ years of computational mechanics related research and/or experience -- post terminal degree. Applicants with experience and education levels that differ significantly from the minimum listed here may be considered for (and directed to) other publicly available positions within the organization as deemed appropriate for that level of expertise. Experience in finite element and other Computational Modeling tools are required. Ability to work closely with both theoreticians and engineers/scientists conducting related physical experiments is required. The candidate must be able to support multiple modeling projects simultaneously as the electromagnetic launcher is only one of several projects within the section. Because of the sensitivity of customer related requirements, U.S. Citizenship is required. Additionally, ability to obtain/maintain a SECRET DoD clearance with access to NRL and other Naval facilities is a condition of employment. DESIRED SKILLS: The preferred candidate will also have a demonstrated record of technical leadership and publications in peer reviewed journals; excellent written and oral communication skills; experience in the development of research initiatives including grant and research proposal writing for work with governmental or industrial clients; experience in experimental research involving one or more of the areas listed above. Additionally, the ideal candidate will work comfortably within a cross-disciplinary team in either leadership or supporting roles, by providing strong technical expertise and proposing new areas of scholarship.
