Motor Drives Engineer
SUMMARY: Under general supervision of the Manager of Power Engineering, the Motor Drives Engineer provides technical leadership and coordination for new technology programs with emphasis on motor drives design. Provides power electronics engineering support for, design, analysis, development, integration / operation of electrical components and contributes to the preparation of technical proposals. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Interpret customer specification to define requirements for power electronics circuits and systems design. Special emphasis on motor drive technology 2. Support new programs from conceptual design, detail design to program completion 3. Write product and test specifications 4. Perform engineering analysis of power electrical motor drives circuits or systems 5. Provide sustaining engineering on existing products and technical support for fielded equipment 6. Support marketing with proposals in area of conceptual designs, work break down structures, schedules and preliminary part's lists 7. Take directions from project engineer or department manager QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or equivalent plus 10 years experience in design of power conversion equipment 2. Must be familiar with IGBTs, SCRs, and other power switching devices 3. Must be familiar with Power Conversion techniques such as Buck/Boost Converters, Inverters, Pulse Width Modulation (PWM), Stepped wave, Variable Frequency, Load Commutated Inverters, Cycloconverters and other inverter topologies for marine, and industrial applications. 4. Must be familiar with Motor Drive design and various motor types including Induction, Wound Rotor, Synchronous and Permanent Magnet motors from small motors, i.e. 5 to 100 Hp to large motors > 1000Hp at operating voltages up to and including medium voltage 15,000 VAC, 3 Phase power lines. 5. Experience with marine or shipboard applications preferred. 6. Magnetics design and control loop design is a plus 7. Basic computer applications 8. Circuit analysis applications, PSPICE and MATLAB preferred 9. Experience in development of military products a plus 10. Ability to obtain a secret security clearance EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE: Bachelor's degree (B. S.) from four-year college or university; plus ten years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community. Ability to write speeches and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format. Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors. MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to apply advanced mathematical concepts such as exponents, logarithms, quadratic equations, and permutations. Ability to apply mathematical operations to such tasks as frequency distribution, determination of test reliability and validity, analysis of variance, correlation techniques, sampling theory, and factor analysis. REASONING ABILITY: Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
