About the Opportunity This is an intermediate or advanced engineering position within the IT Network Engineering group in the IT Infrastructure & Network Department at FirstEnergy Corp. The Network Engineering staff has responsibility for End-to-end engineering of FirstEnergy's WAN/LAN communications systems throughout OH,PA and NJ. This dynamic communications engineer will work as part of a team in the Network Engineering group to design & develop detailed engineering job packages for modifications or additions to FirstEnergy's enterprise WAN/ LAN infrastructure. Additionally the engineer will be responsible for documenting approved engineering designs and field revisions using AutoCad and Visio drawing tools, serve as project lead or team participant for the implementation of Network Services projects as required, provide technical & off-hours support to IT operations groups as required, keep abreast of new technology developments through research and reading, and prepare written and oral reports to keep team leads informed of work progress. The desired candidate should possess knowledge/experience with some or all of the following transport and/or data technologies: Cisco 15454 SONET/DWDM; microwave and/or radio systems; ATM; Frame-Relay; fiber optics; leased circuit facilities; voice services and networks; Nortel PBX; Cisco routing/switching architectures; Cisco VPN & wireless solutions; strong TCP/IP background; IP addressing schemes; QIP DHCP/DNS; IP data security practices; understanding of the mechanics of network transmission at all 7 layers of the OSI model.

Qualifications

Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering /Electronics Technology, Computer Science, or a related field. The equivalent in related work experience and self study may be substituted.

Must have strong analytical & design skills with the ability to resolve complex technical issues

Knowledge of data/telecommunications networking technologies, standards and understanding of the mechanics of network transmission at all 7 layers of the OSI model.

Creative, self-motivated team player, with a demonstrated ability to initiate and build relationships both internally and externally with minimal supervision/direction from management.

Proven ability to manage multiple tasks/projects as well as to lead small to medium size projects.

Must have demonstrated effective written and oral communications skills
