Alpheus Communications, a well established provider of data center and telecom services, is currently seeking an experienced Network Operations BGP & OSPF Engineer to join our growing team in our Houston, TX location.
General Summary:
Perform duties as the Network Senior Telephony IP Engineer in the Network Operations Center. Delivers network infrastructure activities, including design, installation, configuration, upgrading, updating and troubleshooting of Layer 2 and 3.
Duties and Responsibilities:Identifies problems provides solutions utilizing knowledge of applications, networking hardware and operating systems, such as routers, switches, bridges, servers, security and firewall systems. Plans, schedules, and performs installation of hardware upgrades, operating system patches and upgrades, application patches and upgrades to all portal infrastructure components and assist in the testing and validation of new software releases prior to production implementation.Manage Layer 2 Switching Design and implement VLAN’s, & 802.1Q VLAN Trunking, Fast Port Ethernet, Security using Cisco Catalyst Switches and Routers.Manage Layer 3 Routing - Perform IP Addressing and Subnetting, Route Summarization and Redistribution; Design and implement static and dynamic routing protocols, including OSPF, on Cisco Routers; configure BGPv4, IBGP, AS-Path Filters, Prefix Filters, BGP Path Attributes, and Route Reflectors for an ISP transit network.Configure new network equipment, turn up and test new services with customers.Establishes best practice standards and policies surrounding deployment and administration of infrastructure. Manages change control and scheduled maintenance processes for supported infrastructure. Develop and maintain documentation for implementation, operational support and audits including topology drawings, cabling maps, port connections, processes and procedures. Demonstrate an in-depth technical knowledge of broadband equipment operation and theory.Demonstrate and be able to explain an advanced knowledge of networking concepts from DS-1 level through OC192 and Dense Wave Division Multiplexing.Provide refinements for the tools (NetCool, Solarwinds, CTC, Node Manager, etc.) used to monitor network elements and Cisco Routers. Demonstrate the ability to correlate events and alarms to identify the root cause of a failure.Demonstrate the ability to escalate equipment troubles or software problems to the various equipment vendors for quick resolutions.Identify data integrity problems and escalate them through internal channels to resolution.Perform analysis on the different vendor’s equipment and recreate similar problems in a lab environment.Provide high level technical support for the NOC, Field Operations, Engineering and Provisioning.Develop operational acceptance procedures for new equipment. Provide training and technical guidance to the NOC Transport technicians.Develop and direct the troubleshooting and resolution of network/system level failures.Identify negative trends: troubleshoot, isolate, and correct the problems prior to a total failure.
Knowledge and Skills:
Candidate must have excellent analytical and problem solving skills, as well as excellent communication, decision-making and organizational skills. Candidate must have strong technical skills in the transport / fiber / IP telecommunications field. Candidate must be able to work under stress and in a fast paced customer driven environment.
Physical Environment/Working Conditions:
Operate within a 24x7, Network Operation Center environment. Scheduled hours will be Monday through Friday but must be able to work after-hours, weekends and be on-call.
Equipment Used:Personal ComputerTrouble Ticket software, Network Management software (Netcool and Solarwinds), Word, Excel, and Microsoft Project programs.Routers, Switches and Transport equipment from various vendors.
Job Qualifications/ Requirements:A minimum of 8 to 10 years planning, designing, operating, maintaining and/or troubleshooting Cisco IP Telephony networks employing relevant technology is required. Candidate must have at least a current CCNA or CCNP Certification.Thorough knowledge and experience with BGP and OSPF is required. Previous experience with an ISP, RBOC, CLEC, LEC or an ILEC is highly desired. Experience required in SONET, DWDM and call center. Prior experience in telecommunications transport network administration, including acceptance, testing, and troubleshooting maintenance activities is essential. Prior experience as a lead or supervisor also preferred as this position may eventually become a management position supervising technicians.
