Optical Process Engineer

Founded in 1982, Surmet Corporation is a technology based small business enterprise. Surmet is focusing on the development and manufacturing of  advanced optical ceramics for numerous applications such as light weight and high performance transparent armor, infrared (IR) windows, domes and lenses and large sized reconnaissance windows for defense and aerospace applications. In addition to its Head Quarters in Burlington, MA, Surmet has established facilities in Buffalo, New York and Murrieta, CA. for a vertically integrated optical ceramics company. 

 

Position Summary: The position is available for our Buffalo, NY facility. Design and develop technical solutions relating to optical fabrication and component applications in the area of precision polishing, grinding and shaping of optical ceramic materials.

 

Duties and Responsibilities: Responsible for the research, design and development of optical fabrication technology, processes and related tooling.Coordinates a variety of research and testing for development of standard (or production) processes. Determines cause and corrective procedures for failed processes. Oversees the formulation of process instructions and procedures. Prepares cost estimations and works with customers to resolve technical problems. Determines equipment manufacturing capability and recommends equipment upgrades, modifications, and improvements. Provides project management support for complex jobs.

 

Qualifications and Experience: Excellent communication skills required Six Sigma Black Belt training desired Requirements:

 B.S. or Associate Degree in Mechanical, Industrial Engineering, or Optical Engineering with focus on ceramics finishing processes or demonstrated capability3-5 years experience in precision optical fabrication of glass or ceramic materials.Knowledge of requirements for military electro-optics systems requirements desiredKnowledge of project management procedures desiredExperience with optical manufacturing processes:ConventionalHigh speedDeterministic



· Optical testing (use of interferometers and other optical test equipment)
