Product Engineer - Shifter Cables (ATX)

BASIC FUNCTION

 

Provide engineering leadership in a variety of engineering functions, design and customer support related tasks in the planning and development of new products.  Tasks are typically semi-complex in nature with some requirement to exercise independent judgement.

 



ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

 

Product Engineering functions and design tasks for Automatic Shifter cables (ATX)

¨ Free Body Analysis

¨ Direct and evaluate FEA analysis

¨ Direct and evaluate stack-up analysis

¨ Identify Material requirements and make selection

¨ Apply and understand Statistical Analysis (Reliability, SPC)

¨ Review and update Lessons Learned

¨ Lead and maintain the DFMEA C/W Robustness tools

¨ Read and interpret customer engineering specifications

¨ Prepare and coordinate DVP&R – validation testing

¨ Apply design for six sigma tools (DFM, DFA)

¨ Lead Design Reviews

¨ Read and interpret CAD models and 2D prints

¨ Design Automatic Shifter cables assemblies (evaluate customer needs and create BOM by identifying the combination of catalog components and new components)

¨ Design new Automatic Shifter cable components

¨ Apply GD&T as necessary to design

¨ Create and approve Dura internal prints c/w detail per drafting standard

¨ Create and approve customer prints c/w details per customer standards

¨ Create and process prints in response to quotes (RFE)

¨ Manage the release of design for prototype builds

¨ Prepare and release orders for prototype samples (PSR)

¨ Manage the release of designs for production and engineering changes per the Engineering Release standards (PCRN)

¨ Lead and create benchmarking reports on competitive products

¨ Review and analyze warranty data

¨ VEVA (cost savings)

 

 

Product Engineering program management deliverables

¨ Lead assigned Cross Functional Teams (CFT) in APQP process

¨ Manage and maintain the open issues deck

¨ Manage and maintain the program Status reports

¨ Manage and maintain the program timeline

 

Product Engineering customer support functions

¨ Provide technical solutions that interface with the vehicle transmission and Floor and Column Shifter system level requirements

¨ Coordinate CAD models and prints

¨ Coordinate prototype samples

¨ Coordinate product testing validation

¨ Provide onsite support (tech center builds, plant build, launch support)

¨ Support Customer Operating Systems - Engineering release systems, Engineering testing specifications, Prototype order systems, APQP and timing deliverable systems, CAD systems, Warranty system, Materials reporting systems etc.

 

GENERALIZED FUNCTIONS

 

 1. Responsible for the design and development of new and current products.

 

 2.  Coordinates prototype and production sample builds.

 

 3.  Coordinates preparing quotation packages and making engineering drawings as required to facilitate changes in production.

 

 4.  Evaluate proposed engineering changes for impact and feasibility, on the product and process prior to incorporation.

 

 5.  Responsible for making sure the APQP Documentation is up to date.

 

 6.  Work with component suppliers to maximize design effectiveness through purchasing.

 

 7.  Responsible for performing design studies and stack-ups.

 

8. Lead Product Design Reviews.

 

9. Insure the availability of DURA prints.

 



ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

 

1. Assists designers with information on new and changing products.

 

2. Completes other duties as assigned by supervisor.

 

3. Analyze failure modes and develop corrective actions to new and current products.

 

4. Explore design change opportunities to improve manufacturing, product reliability and/or cost utilizing VA/VE and DFM/DFA.

 

5. Participate in tooling run-offs and equipment run-offs, as necessary.

 

6. Participate in regularly scheduled Team meetings.

 

 

STANDARD QUALIFICATIONS

 

Education: Bachelors Degree in a Mechanical Engineering scientific field

 

Experience:  3 years to less than 5 years of related experience. 5+ years required in direct Automotive experience with Floor and Column Shifter systems and vehicle transmission interfaces.

  Additional education can not be substituted for experience and vice versa

additional experience will not be substituted for minimum education requirements.

Experience is enhanced and preferred by direct engineering experience with competitive suppliers or Automakers in Shifter systems.
