Job Summary:

The Project Engineer – Phosphors is responsible for maintaining state-of-the-art knowledge of phosphor developments in the external market.  The Project Engineer – Phosphors is responsible for evaluating phosphors and identifying materials compatible with the stringent requirements of Luminus high flux density chips, and for delivering proof-of-concept level designs for single- and multi-color phosphor converted LEDs for the illumination and display markets.  The Project Engineer – Phosphors will be the primary internal expert on phosphor materials, acting as a knowledge resource for advanced R&D programs, development engineering, and for manufacturing.  Growth opportunities may include the potential to take demonstrated designs into and through the full product development process.

 



Duties/Responsibilities:

· Fully characterize and evaluate candidate phosphor materials for high flux density phosphor converted LEDs.  Create and maintain internal phosphor knowledge bank, including detailed materials knowledge (absorption, emission, thermal quenching, concentration quenching, etc.)

· Deliver high quality proof-of-concept phosphor-based product designs to feed into new product introduction process in a fast paced environment.

· Serve as primary technical contact between Luminus and phosphor suppliers.

· Work closely with process engineers to ensure downstream manufacturability of delivered designs.  Work closely with device design engineers and product managers to provide well-documented theoretical expectations for device performance potential.

· Extend and develop theoretical models for phosphor converted LED performance including interaction effects for multi-component phosphor blends.

 



Minimum Qualification Required: (when qualifications include education or equivalent, define equivalent)

· Self-motivated hands-on experienced experimentalist with demonstrated ability to deliver designs into product development, including communication of and documentation of theoretical and experimental results.

· Experience with semiconductor device development, semiconductor packaging technology, and design of experiments.  Experience with phosphor-converted LEDs is a plus.

· M.S. in electrical engineering, physics, material science, chemistry or a related discipline with at least 3 years of device experience.

 

 

Additional Desired Qualification/Experience:

· Materials background including knowledge of concentration quenching and thermal quenching characteristics of rare-earth materials.

· Basic understanding of the role of phosphor particle size, particle loading, and binder selection in determining LED efficacy, color control and spatial color uniformity.

· Understanding of LED chip fabrication, packaging technology, testing and reliability.

· Ph.D. in scientific discipline and/or additional experience preferred.

· M.S. or Ph.D. in Applied Physics, Materials Science, Electrical Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, Optics or equivalent discipline and 3+ years relevant product development experience required.
