SUMMARY: Perform and lead fundamental and applied research through the application of advanced experimental mechanics principles and techniques to quantify the mechanical behavior of structural materials to support integrity and reliability assessments.  Develop and lead large, complex experimental efforts in support of multidisciplinary (experimental-analytic/numerical) structural integrity and reliability assessments.Define experimental approaches designed to quantify the required mechanical behavior for complex life prediction models and actively participate in model development.Lead teams in the development of innovative testing and instrumentation methods.Participate in and lead individual and collaborative research projects as well as develop, promote, and write proposals for research programs.  Interact with both commercial and government clients.Manage tasks and projects to successful completion within technical, budget and schedule constraints.Communicate effectively in both oral and written forms with colleagues as well as current and potential customers.  Prepare proposals, reports, and technical papers.

 

 

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: M.S. or Ph.D. in Engineering Mechanics, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or similar curriculum with min. 3.5/4.0 GPA.  Requires 3-5 years of experience in experimental mechanics, including test protocol development, servohydraulic test machines, strain gages and instrumentation, and data acquisition.  Must be familiar with fracture, fatigue, and fatigue crack growth testing.  Environmentally-assisted fatigue experience is considered a plus.  Excellent interpersonal communication skills (both oral and written) required for interaction with technical staff, program teams, and clients.  Must be able to work independently with relatively little supervision and function effectively as part of project teams.  Supervisory experience of lab personnel desired but not required.
