Scientist 4 - Compliance / Enforcement

The South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) is a regional agency of the state of Florida, and is charged with managing and protecting water resources of the region by balancing and improving water quality, flood control, natural systems and water supply. SFWMD's boundaries extend from central Florida to Lake Okeechobee, and from coast to coast, from Fort Myers to Fort Pierce, south through the sprawling Everglades to the Florida Keys and Florida Bay. The Scientist 4 facilitates regulatory enforcement activities in the Environmental Resource Compliance Division.  This position is based in West Palm Beach.  Geographic area of responsibility includes: Palm Beach, Broward, Miami-Dade, Monroe, Orange, Osceola, and Polk Counties.  Requires extensive coordinating with Environmental Resource Regulation Compliance and Permitting staff, Office of Counsel, regulatory agencies, and the public.  Reviews and compiles enforcement and legal documentation for the purpose of supporting case resolution through Consent Agreements or litigation.  Documentation may involve ground or aerial reconnaissance.  Must be knowledgeable in and able to interpret Environmental Resource and Consumptive Use Permits.  Must be self-managed and have the ability and initiative to independently carry out job assignments.  Resolves complex, sensitive resource issues and recommends punitive civil penalties.   Must have a BS or BA (Master’s preferred) in Environmental Science, Engineering, Hydrology, Geology or related field and 4 years of progressively responsible experience in environmental permitting, regulatory programs or related work.  Background in practical applications of wetland ecology, surface water or ground water hydrology is preferred, with emphasis on South and Central Florida hydrology and ecosystems.  Personal computer and data base entry skills is required.  Florida drivers license is required.  To apply, visit www.sfwmd.govand reference job #NB50082723.EOE.
