Summary:

 

The individual is responsible for the development and design of control systems on all new equipment plus modifications of existing electrical/control designs to meet customer’s applications.  This person must have a BSEE and be familiar with all relative electrical codes, NFPA, NEC, CSA, CE, etc.  Also he/she must have extensive experience programming in PLC language (IEC 61131-3).  The individual must have solid experience in programming one or more of the common motion control platforms, Siemens, Allen Bradley, G&L, Emerson, etc.  The job will required the ability to generate cabinet layout drawings using AutoCAD 2-D, select and size components, generate schematics, flow charts, timing diagrams, and perform power/sizing calculations for a given application/machine.  The individual will interact with customers and service personnel to resolve field issues.  Also will help to test and debug new custom machines on the assembly floor.  The individual must have good verbal, written, and computer skills.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

 

Develop and design control systems for a variety of machines, both standard and custom.  Must be able to size and select components required for the application.  Create cabinet layouts and generate schematics for the shop, field service and customer use.  Create the logic and operator interface screens required to operate the designed equipment effectively and efficiently for ease of use by the customer.

 

Responsible for keeping current with all regulatory requirements NFPA, NEC, CSA, CE and ensuring all designs meet or exceed code.

 

Must maintain electrical documentation to minimize confusion on future machine builds.  Must also maintain all programs to ensure the logic is well documented so customers, service personnel and others can understand and debug problems.

 

Must perform appropriate power calculations, heat dissipation calculations and other sizing calculations as necessary.

 

Individual will support the field service technicians with any questions generated from field issues. 

 

Individual will interact with Customer Service, Production, Purchasing and Sales.  Customer interaction, although limited, will be required to understand system needs for custom equipment.  Limited direct customer support for field service issue may be required.

 

Testing and debugging new and custom machines on the shop floor will be required.

Education and/or experience

 

Four year degree in the sciences (BSEE preferred) plus minimum eight years of electrical/controls experience.  Experience writing code in IEC 61131-3 and writing code for multi axis motion control platforms (G&L, Emerson, Siemens preferred).  Cabinet design and component selection experience required.  Must have experience creating schematics on AutoCAD’s 2-D system

Ability to read, analyze and interpret Engineering information.  Has ability to write reports, manuals, procedures, and to communicate issues to management, customer service and customer.

Ability to perform mathematic calculations associated with electrical design and software generation.

Ability to problem solve and reason out all potential causes of a given problem.  To have the ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

 

Computer skills

 

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have all intermediate computer skills mastered and have the flexibility to learn new software packages.  Individual must be familiar with Microsoft office, PIC-Pro, Siemens Step 7 software packages, WINCC, AutoCAD, and others.
