Senior Mechanical Engineer (or Senior Structural Health Monitoring Engineer) HR5063

The successful applicant will perform design, modeling, simulation, and experimental validation work as part of a team tasked with the development of integrated vehicle health monitoring technologies, including actuator and sensor selection and placement, and statistically-sound signal processing algorithms for damage detection. The engineer will work under the direction of a project team leader, but must be able to independently generate ideas and oversee thorough implementation of these ideas into hardware and software once approved, from development of requirements through experimental testing, data analysis, documentation, and reporting. The position requires good interaction and communication with all members of the team, including a subcontracting organization which will provide laboratory facilities and technical personnel.

 

Basic Qualifications:Master’s Degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Aerospace Engineering (Required).Minimum of five years of demonstrable relevant experience in mathematical modeling of components and systems, programming and data analysis, finite element simulation of mechanical components in static and dynamic scenarios, and hands-on laboratory experimentation. (Required).

 

Qualifications:

The preferred candidate will have clearly demonstrable and applicable experience with most or all of the following: integrated vehicle health monitoring technologies including sensors and algorithms or related nondestructive evaluation technologies; modeling of systems from basic physics principles; computer programming, data analysis, and visualization in MATLAB; finite element simulation (ABAQUS) including scripting; experimental methods in dynamics and stress analysis; metallic and composite materials, their properties and uses, their manufacturing processes, and their damage mechanisms; data acquisition and signal processing hardware; and statistical analysis and stochastic methods. Good knowledge of computer-driven systems and common office software tools is expected. A self motivated, well organized, and dependable person with good verbal and written communication skills and leadership skills is highly desirable. Good interaction with collaborators and customers and the ability to learn quickly are required.
