Sr. Production Systems Engineer

Position Description:

General Summary: Designs and manages the daily operations of centralized storage area network, backup and disaster recovery, and centralized and decentralized server farms consisting of Windows, Mac and Linux computers. Evaluates new hardware and operating system technology and makes recommendations to Production/Engineering management on adoptions and direction. Implements system security, access control policies and group memberships. Mentors System Administrators and Network Engineers in technical and professional growth.. Responsibilities 1. Storage Area Network (SAN) Design and Architecture• Works closely with vendors, Enterprise Infrastructure Architect and Enterprise Software Architect in designing and managing centralized and decentralized server farms.• Performs capacity planning including allocating processors, memory and storage as well as planning future expansion requirements.• Participates as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) for design reviews, technology and tool selection. • Reviews business solutions, design, test and implementation plans created by team and ensures adherence to standards and best practices. • Provides 3rd level support for server tuning including monitoring, troubleshooting and optimizing performance.2. Technology Reviews• Researches and reviews new hardware, operating system and 3rd party technologies.• Evaluates new technologies against competitors and validate the usability of the technology.• Educates team and Fox IT management in new technology improvements.3. Security• Establishes security and audit system and directory service security.• Works closely with Production Software Engineers to provide a secure application environment.4. Upgrades• Actively participates in all application upgrades.• Executes upgrade activities and/or supervises the execution of upgrades.• Remains current on vendors’ standard support schedules and release cycles.5. Production Support• Ensures necessary hardware and software licenses and maintenance are purchased in order to maintain compliance and vendor support.• Audits production and development environment periodically to ensure hardware and software currency and license compliance. • Works closely with other system administrators, application developers and production support personnel to gain a thorough understanding of the architecture of the Production system being supported.• Serves as an escalation point for bugs and other issues within Post Production where multiple disciplines may be necessary for resolution.• Establishes user security for all responsible environments and instances in coordination with the Production tools and in compliance with access security policies and procedures.• Provides 24x7 on call production support.6. Administrative• Communicates plans, status and issues to management on a regular basis.• Interfaces with vendors on a regular basis to resolve technical issues and evaluate technology advancements.• Works closely with other IT resources to provide pertinent information in support of application availability and performance. • Performs as a technical lead to System Administrators and Network Engineers.• Mentors System Administrators and Network Engineers in technology and professional development.7. Knowledge: • Mastery level knowledge Microsoft Windows operating system, Macintosh OSX operating system and the Unix and Linux platforms.• Mastery level knowledge of Unix/Linux System level administration, Windows Server Administration• Mastery level knowledge of maintaining servers for standard Intranet/Internet service such as Network File System (NFS), Samba, and ftp.• Good knowledge of deployment strategies of distributed and multi-tiered applications.• Comprehensive knowledge of LAN/WAN infrastructures and protocols.• Good knowledge of load balancing, system tuning, and redundancy and failover. Skills:• Strong ability to troubleshoot Production server issues.• Strong verbal and written communication skills.• Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage a diversified workload.• Good analytical and problem-solving skills.• Demonstrated ability to work effectively with all levels of staff, clients and other IT personnel.• Demonstrated ability to train others.• Ability to write and present effective materials, including presentations, status reporting, technical diagrams and flowcharts. Experience:• Minimum 8 years Production experience in a Media infrastructure environment supporting operating systems, Storage Systems and compute farms.• Experience working with a High Availability Media based Storage Area Network (SAN).• Experience working in a multi-platform environment, including direct experience with Mac OSX, UNIX, Linux, Windows 95/97/NT/2000.• Experience with Domain Name System (DNS), Network Information Service (NIS), Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP), Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP), Redundant Arrays of Independent Disks (RAID).• Familiarity with cryptography tools (e.g. secure shell, OpenSSL, IPSec).
