Director, Managing Economist

Major Purpose of This Job: To direct and oversee the research operations of Economic & Statistical Research consistent with the direction of the Chief Economist.




The Managing Economist plays a multi-dimensional role. First and foremost the candidate coaches and directs the Unit to ensure that reports and analysis are completed in an accurate and timely fashion in accordance with prescribed policies and standards. Additionally, the Managing Economist personally handles multiple projects, delegating when appropriate. Many of the projects require the ability to synthesize unstructured requests and articulate insights relevant to senior executive discussions. Strong research skills are required for quantitative analysis of complex economic and statistical data. Finally, the Managing Economist supports the Chief Economist in representing the Unit to internal and external clients.

Essential Job Functions:

Ensures all unit resources are utilized in the most effective manner and that the highest level of quality and service is provided to both internal and external clients.

Monitors work process within the unit on an on-going basis to ensure that the Unit is working efficiently.

Acts as a resource for the resolution of more complex analytical and research challenges faced by the Unit.

Coaches and develops staff to ensure the research projects are being correctly performed.

Ensures that all staff are properly trained, identify training needs.

Reviews staff’s completed work for accuracy, completeness, and presentation.

Acts as project leader to implement and oversee new programs and systems to expand and enhance the Unit.

Develops and maintains comprehensive knowledge of all projects, products, and processes under the Unit’s management.

Uses statistical and quantitative techniques to analyze financial, competitive, and statistical data researched.

Prepares clear and descriptive presentations of analytical results.

Creates sophisticated reports, charts, graphs, presentations, and correspondence.

Personally presents research and analysis to internal customers including executive level management.

Develops alternatives, enhancements, and solutions to internal operations which will maximize department effectiveness and efficiency.

Other Responsibilities:

Acts on behalf of the Chief Economist in his absence.

Keeps informed of external and internal NASDAQ OMX issues affecting operations; assures appropriate communication/ dissemination.

Acts as a high-level resource for market and economic information and data.

Develops and maintains strong relationships with other departments to ensure proper flow of information into and out of the Unit.

Corresponds with internal and external customers in response to inquiries.

Education/Experience Requirements:

Advanced degree or equivalent in Finance, Economics, Statistics, or related field. Five to seven years of directly related experience. Significant knowledge of the securities industry including market structure knowledge. Proven coaching and interpersonal skills with directing and developing junior colleagues or students. Advanced data analysis, oral and written communication, and presentation skills. Proficiency with statistical analysis software, particularly SAS and SQL, and the use of the full suite of electronic office applications, particularly spreadsheets and presentation software. Ability to work with sensitive and confidential information.

Working Conditions: Normal office conditions. Some travel. Extended hours frequently required.
