Tax Director, I - State & Local Sales & Use

Position Description: Manage the day to day activities of the sales and use tax activities including planning, compliance and audits.  Responsibilities include ensuring compliance with sales and use tax laws and the proactive identification of tax saving opportunities and the implementation of those ideas.  Duties include manage the preparation of sales and use tax returns for all jurisdictions, providing information to and resolving disputes with auditors from taxing jurisdictions and identification and implementation of tax saving opportunities.  Must posses a strong working knowledge of sales and use tax concepts and be able to apply those concepts to specific situations. Primary  Responsibilities Responsible for the timely and accurate preparation of the state and local sales and use tax returns.  Returns are prepared on a monthly, quarterly or annual basis; manage and develop staff. Responsible for the maintenance and continued development of a use tax self-assessment policy and related procedures. Identification of sales activities that require collection of a sale tax and the implementation of procedures to ensure timely and accurate reporting and remittance of collections. Take a leading role in the management and resolution of sales and use tax audits conducted by the various taxing jurisdictions.  The manager will coordinate responses to audit inquires for documents and also to communicate to the Vice President the status of all audits and potential exposures. Identify tax saving opportunities and take an active role in the development and implementation of tax strategies to minimize tax liabilities.  Must be able to work closely with business unit managers and Vice Presidents to obtain necessary information and communicate ideas and requirements. Conduct technical research in matters involving sales and use tax questions.  If necessary coordinates and manage the use of outside advisors. Identification of areas where improvement in compliance activities is required and development of plans to implement required improvements. Responsible for the maintenance and reconciliation of all balance sheet accounts pertaining to sales and use taxes. Maintain proficiency in technical issues and current developments including review of legislative developments and communication of developments. Assist the Corporate Tax Department in other tax matters as required.

Education and Experience:

BS, BA in business administration.  Five to seven years sales and use tax experience in big four accounting firm or with a large company demonstrating a strong working knowledge of sales and use tax concepts the ability to manage people and processes.  Good communication and organization skills with the ability to work independently.
