Food Service Worker

Performs a variety of manual tasks in kitchen or dining area of a food activity, which involves light to moderate physical effort and is done according to established procedures.

 

Actively participates in the preparation of foods by: paring, cutting, dicing, chopping, washing and/or cleaning vegetables and fruits; opening cans and cartons.

 

Makes coffee in urns.  Carries food from kitchen to steam tables and sets up steam tables as required.

 

Removes dirty dishes, glasses and silverware from serving counters.  Mixes washing solutions and operates electric dish washing machines and/or washes dishes, glassware, pots and pans and kitchen utensils by hand.

 

Cleans work area, utensils and equipment; removes garbage; mops floors, walls, windows and tables.

 

Replaces glassware, dishes and silverware and refills condiment containers.  Wipes and washes tables, counter tops, etc.

 

Skills and Knowledge

 

Ability to read and do simple arithmetic.  Knowledge of simple mixing techniques for salads and other food preparations.

 

Responsibilities

 

Follows work schedule, knowing what steps or sequence of steps are needed to complete the work.  Must use judgment in determining that standards of sanitation, attractiveness, timeliness, courtesy, etc. are met in serving and portioning.



Physical Effort

 

Constant standing and walking is required as well as lifting or moving objects weighing up to 50 pounds.  May occasionally work or lift objects weighing over 50 pounds with assistance of other workers.

 

Working Conditions

 

Work is performed in uncomfortable, warm and noisy kitchen and/or serving area.  Worker is exposed to cuts, fumes, burns and cooking odors.  There is danger of slipping on wet floors.

 

Qualifications Required

 

Education:  Successful completion of three years of high school, vocations school or the equivalent in a combination of education and experience.

Experience:  One year of experience in preparing and cooking simple foods and short order in a cafeteria, restaurant or mess.

 

Demonstration of the following work behaviors is desirable:

 

  A. Neatness and good grooming.

  B.  Dependability.

  C. Ability to work under pressure.
