Manager Engineering Design

GENERAL PURPOSEThis position is responsible for engineering design efforts in the Engineering & Technology Department of Schwans Global Supply Chain. This position will lead both processing and packaging design efforts that result in reduced manufacturing cost, reduced waste and increased through put.



DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESLead and conduct studies to identify and develop cost reduction activities within manufacturing and distribution.Act as liaison to the Project Engineers in the project development process from concept to completion. This will include but not be limited to performing the following engineering activities: develop proof-of-concept, develop theory of operation, develop technical project scope of work, develop basic flow diagrams and P&ID documentation. In addition the individual should be capable of developing detailed specifications for both packaging and processing equipment.Work with R&D, Manufacturing and Strategic Sourcing on new products and processes.Primary liaison and interface for providing processing and packaging support to other departments including Operations Business Managers, Manufacturing, Purchasing, R&D, etc. for new and existing product lines.Leads and initiates innovation efforts regarding new processing and packaging equipment, systems and processes.Stays current with new innovations in packaging and processing.



QUALIFICATIONSEducation: Bachelor's degree required in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering or Agricultural Engineering. MBA preferred but not required.Years of Related Experience: 15+ years experience.Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: Prior engineering experience, education and/or training. Prior engineering experience in food, pharmaceutical, or food-related industry as well as experience working in both a plant and corporate environment. Working knowledge of industry regulatory entities (USDA, OSHA, EPA), and legal aspects of packaging. Good PC skills including Microsft Office Suite. Knowledge of project management methodologies, from initial justification through implementation and evaluation. Project cost management and budgeting experience.Ability to develop and monitor project schedules and timelines to identify and meet critical milestones. Demonstrated problem solving, negotiation and facilitation skills. Understanding of general industrial process and control systems. Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to travel 40%-50%
