CLASS SUMMARY
The Department of Human Services Staff Supervisor works under supervision and
is responsible for coordinating staff activities and providing assistance to
participants within a human service program area. This position is governed
by state and federal laws and agency policy.
EXAMPLES OF WORK
1. Coordinates the work activities of lower-level supervisory, professional,
and administrative support staff by assigning and monitoring regular and
special projects, reviewing and approving work plans, schedules, project
reports, and recommendations, disseminating and interpreting policies and
procedures, and presenting in-service training.
2. Provides technical assistance to clients or providers by disseminating
program information, interpreting or clarifying policies and procedures,
investigating and resolving complaints and problems, and preparing and
presenting training programs.
3. Supervises a medium-sized to large staff by interviewing and recommending
for hire, providing training or training opportunities, counseling and
disciplining staff, evaluating the performance of incumbents, and
reviewing supervisory recommendations.
4. Participates in the development of operating policies and procedures by
analyzing the effectiveness of current practices, assessing unit needs,
creating manual and computerized reporting tools, identifying budgetary
needs, and maintaining updated operating manuals.
5. Conducts research, compiles and analyzes program and operating data,
prepares correspondence, reports, and proposals, maintains records and
ensures their security, and serves on committees and task forces.
6. Performs related responsibilities as required or assigned.
WORKING RELATIONSHIPS
The Department of Human Services Staff Supervisor has regular contact with
departmental staff, state and federal agency personnel, clients, and providers.
SPECIAL JOB DIMENSIONS
Occasional in-state travel may be required.
KNOWLEDGES, ABILITIES, AND SKILLS
Knowledge of the procedures and practices of specialized social service
programs.
Knowledge of state and federal regulations and guidelines governing specialized
program area.
Ability to plan, organize, and direct the work of others.
Ability to develop, interpret, and apply state and federal regulations,
guidelines, and policies.
Ability to research, monitor, and evaluate specialized social service
programs.
Ability to present and review oral and written information and materials.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
The formal education equivalent of a bachelor's degree in business
administration, public administration, personnel management, or a related
field; plus three years' experience in the special area supervised or a
related field.
Other job related education and/or experience may be substituted for all or
part of these basic requirements upon approval of the Qualifications Review
Committee.
