CLASS SUMMARY
The Recreational Activity Leader II works under general supervision and is
responsible for planning, scheduling, organizing, and leading recreational
activities for residents of a state-operated facility. This position is
governed by state and federal laws and agency policy.
EXAMPLES OF WORK
1. Plans and schedules recreational activities, determines staff, vehicles,
facilities, and equipment needs, prepares and posts schedule of events.
2. Leads recreational activities, checks out equipment, teaches and coaches
participants, monitors student behavior, and resolves disputes.
3. Develops and/or modifies programs or games as necessary to permit
participation by disabled or restricted residents.
4. Contacts various resource groups for information concerning events and
ticket costs and drives vehicle to transport residents to events,
restaurants, or other outings.
5. Provides direction to subordinates.
6. Performs related responsibilities as required or assigned.
WORKING RELATIONSHIPS
The Recreational Activity Leader II has regular contact with residents, staff,
and community-based groups.
SPECIAL JOB DIMENSIONS
Frequent driving of buses or vans is required. Occasional exposure to violent
and physically aggressive residents may be required.
KNOWLEDGES, ABILITIES, AND SKILLS
Knowledge of the principles and practices of recreational activity programs.
Knowledge of activity therapy and behavior modification.
Ability to plan, organize, and direct the work of others.
Ability to instruct, direct, and participate in recreational activities.
Ability to evaluate, modify, and recommend activities to meet clients
treatment objectives.
Ability to prepare, set-up, and maintain equipment used in recreational
activities.
Ability to observe and record client behavior and participation during
activities.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
The formal education equivalent of a bachelor's degree in physical education,
recreation administration, or a related field.
OR
The formal education equivalent of a high school diploma; plus three years'
experience in a patient activities program in a health care setting, or social
or recreational program.
Other job related education and/or experience may be substituted for all or
part of these basic requirements upon approval of the Qualifications Review
Committee.
