Position Description:
Deputy Probation Officers perform professional level work in the supervision and investigation of probationers and perform related duties as required. The essential functions include: conducts general and pre-sentence investigations; investigates petitions; prepares various type-written reports upon request including those for early termination or reduction of charges; prepares recommendations and assists the courts in detention and sentencing decisions; supervises and counsels probationers to assist in complying with court orders, educational and vocational services, and family counseling; performs intensive casework management; serves as liaison between court, community-based agencies, law enforcement and government agencies; represents the department at commissions, court hearings, community agencies as required; assists in training of new and reassigned officers; may serve as back-up supervisor as needed;
performs a variety of specialized assignments.
Employees may be required to work nights, weekends and/or holidays, and/or to work at a community-based location. A shift differential for work performed on designated evening and night shifts will be available.
The eligible lists resulting from this selection process will be used to fill vacancies at both the Adult Probation Department and the Juvenile Probation Department.
Minimum Qualifications:
1a. Possession of a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in the Social and Behavioral Sciences or a closely related field. A copy of a diploma and/or official transcript will be required prior to appointment; OR
1b. Students with major coursework in the Social and Behavioral Sciences or a closely related field who will complete their baccalaureate degree by June 30, 2009 will be conditionally qualified and may be admitted into the examination pending completion of the degree. Please read the Verification section of this announcement for additional information; AND
2. Possession of a valid Class C driver license. A copy of the Driver’s License will be required prior to appointment. Applicant must possess a good driving record which is defined as not having had the driving privilege suspended, revoked or been placed on probation by the DMV for a cause involving the safe operation of a motor vehicle within the preceding three (3) years. Violations will be reviewed on an individual basis and may be cause for non selection or disciplinary action if employed. A Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) must be presented as part of the background investigation. This printout is available from any DMV office for a fee of $10.00; AND
3. Must be a citizen of the United States, or a permanent resident alien who is eligible for and who has applied for citizenship at least one (1) year prior to filing. Must be a US citizen at the time of appointment. Candidates who have filed for, but not yet received, U.S. citizenship will be placed under waiver pending proof of citizenship; AND
4. Must be a minimum of 18 years of age prior to appointment.
Note: a) Experience working with children and/or adults in a correctional or institutional setting, or in a clinical/case management setting, is highly preferred.
b) Deputy Probation Officer employees must complete 200 hours of CORE probation officer training during the first year of appointment. Appointees will be required to meet state-mandated CORE training requirements, as defined by Standards and Training for Corrections (STC).
c) Deputy Probation Officer employees must complete 40 hours of PC 832 Arrest, Search and Seizure training during the first year of appointment. Appointees will be required to meet state-mandated training requirements, as defined by Standards and Training for Corrections (STC).
Background Investigation:Pass/Fail
Prior to appointment, each candidate’s background will be reviewed to determine his/her fitness for this employment. Applicants will be required to complete a lengthy P.O.S.T. (Peace Officer Standards & Training) personal history statement and submit to a polygraph and/or psychological examination, medical screening, and drug screening. Reasons for rejection may include repeated or serious violations of the law, inability to work well with co-workers, inability to accept supervision, insufficient knowledge of law enforcement work, or other relevant factors. Applicants must have a current history of careful and responsible motor vehicle operation. Negligent motor operator probation, license suspension, drunk driving, reckless or hit-and-run driving records or records of multiple moving violations may be cause for rejection. Candidates must not have been convicted of a felony in this state or in any federal jurisdiction or of any offense in any state or any federal jurisdiction, which would have been a felony if committed in this state. Criminal records will be carefully reviewed. Candidates who do not report their complete criminal records on their applications will be disqualified. Candidates must pass all parts of the background investigation.

Verification:
Prior to appointment, all candidates must submit a copy of diploma or official transcript showing award of baccalaureate degree and a copy of valid driver’s license when requested by the hiring department.
Conditionally qualified candidates who are successful in the examination will be placed under waiver. Conditionally qualified candidates must submit a copy of diploma or official transcript showing award of baccalaureate degree to the examination analyst in order to have the waiver removed.
Failure to provide the required verification may result in rejection of application and/or removal from eligibility for referral and appointment in this class. Verification may be waived if impossible to obtain. The applicant must submit a signed statement explaining why verification cannot be obtained. Waiver requests will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
Selection Procedures:
Standardized Written Examination: Weight is Pass/Fail
The State of California Corrections Standards Authority - Probation Officer Examination will measure candidates’ ability to read, understand, and recall written information; and other characteristics found to be important components of successful Probation Officer’s performance. Please see the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation website for the Candidate Orientation Booklet for this written examination. Only those candidates who successfully pass the written examination will move forward in the examination process.
Tentative Date(s): Standardized Written Exam Administration
Qualified applicants will be notified via email of the date, time and location of their scheduled examination. Qualified applicants who have completed their degree by the final filing date will be scheduled to participate in the first exam administration, anticipated to be held on May 31, 2008. Based on the business needs of the Departments of Adult Probation and Juvenile Probation, conditionally qualified applicants who will complete their degree by June 30, 2008 may be scheduled to participate in the first exam administration.
A second exam administration may be scheduled on January 31, 2009. Conditionally qualified applicants completing their degree after the final filing date may be scheduled to participate in the second exam administration.
The names of conditionally qualified candidates who are successful in an examination will be placed under waiver pending completion of degree. Waiver may be removed when candidates submit a copy of diploma and/or official transcript showing completion of degree to the examination analyst.
The names of eligibles from the earlier eligible list shall be merged with the names of eligibles on the later eligible list by score. Eligibles with the same score will be listed in alphabetical order.
Training and Experience Evaluation: Weight is 100%
Information provided by candidates on the Supplemental Questionnaire will be used to evaluate the candidates’ relative knowledge, skills and abilities in job related areas. This information will be used to determine scores and ranks on the eligible list and may be made available to the Adult Probation Department and Juvenile Probation Department.

Certification Rule: The Department of Human Resources and the employee organization that represents this classification are currently discussing a certification rule for these eligible lists. If agreement is reached for Rule of the List or for a certification rule of more than three scores, the names of eligibles will be referred to hiring departments based on the rule agreed upon. If no agreement is reached, Rule of Three Scores will be utilized. The Adult Probation Department and Juvenile Probation Department may administer additional selection procedures to make final hiring decisions.
