Assistant Director of Parks and Recreation

The Parks and Recreation Services Deputy Manager will be responsible for assisting the Parks and Recreation Services Manager (Director of Parks and Recreation) in addressing operational needs and to manage multiple unit projects and maintaining positive customer relations.  This individual will provide operational direction and technical oversight and consultation in accordance with unit policies, procedures and processes.  The Deputy Manager will be responsible for:

Taking a leadership role in providing direction to subordinates related to customer service, staffing, facilities, equipment, and project and program delivery;Evaluating and approving plans, specifications, contracts and equipment specifications as they affect operations;Providing direction in evaluating recreation program delivery as it reflects trends and affects operations;Coordination and implementation of asset maintenance and management program;Assisting in budget preparation and the monitoring of resource allocations, expenditures, and revenue;Assuring that safety principles, practices and precautions are being followed across the work areas;Coordinating seasonal staff training and development program, addressing operations documentation needs;Administering scholarship and agency pass program;Maintaining and reviewing operational workload performance measures;Assisting in identifying business opportunities and demonstrate continuous effort to improve operational effectiveness and efficiencies.The successful candidate for the Parks and Recreation Services Deputy Manager needs to demonstrate:

Principles and practices of state-of-the-art parks and recreation service delivery;Modern principles and best practices of recreation facility and recreation service delivery;Contemporary principles and best practices of personnel management and supervision;Demonstrated use of computer and software applications for the successful delivery of parks and recreation services;Outstanding customer service principles and practices;Ability to critically analyze operations, collaboratively designing and instituting improvements without disruption of existing operations;Ability to establish and maintain effective, respectful, and productive working relationships;Ability to negotiate effective and appropriate solutions in difficult situations;Ability to establish and maintain effective, respectful, and productive working relationships. 

Interested candidates should possess a Bachelor’s degree in Facilities Management, Recreation Management, Leisure Facilities Management, Commercial Recreation, Public Administration, or a related field from an accredited college or university. Certified Parks and Recreation Professional (CPRP) and possession of a Masters degree are preferred.  At least four years supervisory experience and four years recreation facility management experience required. At least two years working in a union environment is desired.

The Parks and Recreation Services Deputy Manager will assist the Parks and Recreation Services Manager in critically analyzing operations, collaboratively designing and instituting improvements without disruption of existing operations.  He/she will be able to thoroughly evaluate program alternatives and make recommendations for improvements in business programs and service delivery to the Parks and Recreation Services Manager.  This individual will implement approved operational improvements and monitor progress of their staff.  This leader will be extremely organized with demonstrated experience allocating resources, setting priorities and make sound operational decisions.  The Deputy Manager will estimate resources and equipment required for projects across work areas of the unit in order to advise the Parks and Recreation Services Manager of operational needs and will have a strong ability to work effectively with all levels of management and staff.

This is a key position within the City government environment and it is essential for the successful candidate to work closely with the City Council and the leadership team in carrying out city-wide initiatives and setting the tone and vision for the employees of the city.
