INFORMATIONPerforms journey-level carpentry work on new construction, alteration and repair projects.ESSENTIAL JOB
FUNCTIONSInterprets blueprints, building plans, and sketches for information pertaining to the type of material required and dimensions, scope, and layout of the structure to be fabricated, repaired, or installed; prepares project layout; measures and marks cutting and assembly lines on various materials and prepares worksite as prescribed; verifies trueness of structure and makes appropriate modifications as necessary; cuts, shapes, fastens, and assembles materials according to prescribed measurements and instruction; lays out, constructs, erects, installs, and repairs structures and fixtures consisting of various materials; fits and installs prefabricated structures, fixtures, and finish hardware; maintains tools, machinery, and shop area in proper working order; adheres to applicable regulations and standards pertaining to work and shop safety; prepares daily work reports and materials takeoff; consults with and responds to inquiries from concerned parties; supervises Carpenter Apprentices and Helpers performing building, installation, and repair work.MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Completion of a recognized carpenter apprentice training program of at least four years' duration* -OR- Five years' experience in carpentry work on buildings, one year of which must have been at the journey-level**.Physical Class: 4 - Arduous:
Involves frequent heavy lifting over 25 pounds, often combined with bending, twisting, or working on irregular surfaces; and occasionally requires extraordinary physical activity.
Licenses: A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job related essential functions.
Special Requirement Information: *Applicants who expect to qualify through the completion of a carpenter apprentice training program MUST attach a photocopy of their apprentice training program certificate of completion at the time of filing. Applications without proof of completion will be rejected as incomplete.
To receive credit for training classes, include the names and addresses of school/company conducting the training, dates attended, titles of classes/courses/sessions, the length of time for each class/course/session, and an official certificate or notification of completion of each training program.
**Please ensure application/resumes contain detailed information specifically addressing journey level experience, educational background, and/or specialized training courses/programs completed. Also, the required technical experience can be a combination of County and/or outside experience.

CONTENTThis examination will consist of two parts:
Part I: A Written Test covering Knowledge of General Carpentry/Plan Interpretation; Mechanical Aptitude; Carpentry Mathematics; Written Expression; and Reading Comprehension weighted 50%.
Part II: A Structured Interview covering Job Preparation; Work Skills; Oral & Interpersonal Communications Effectiveness; Work Habits; Adaptability & Dependability; and Leadership & Training weighted 50%.
Only those candidates who PASS the Written Test (Part I) will be eligible to compete in the Structured Interview (Part II) portion of the examination.
If you have taken and passed the Carpenter (Y6257U) written test within the last twenty four (24) months, your written test score from that examination can be transferred to this examination. To extend your score, please advise the Exam Unit Staff, in writing, at the time of application filing. If you wish to retake rather than transfer your score, THE LATEST WRITTEN TEST SCORE WILL APPLY.
Candidates who are currently on the Carpenter (Y6257U) Eligibile Register may apply, however, their written test score and oral interview scores will be automatically transferred to this exam.
CANDIDATES MUST ACHIEVE A PASSING SCORE OF 70% OR HIGHER ON EACH WEIGHTED PART OF THE EXAMINATION IN ORDER TO BE PLACED ON THE ELIGIBILITY REGISTER.
NO PERSON MAY COMPETE IN THIS EXAMINATION MORE THAN ONCE EVERY TWELVED (12) MONTHS.
THE WRITTEN TEST IS NOT REVIEWABLE BY CANDIDATES PER CIVIL SERVICE RULE 7.19.
