The New York City Police Department has unique career opportunities for qualified candidates for Criminalist positions at various levels in the Police Laboratory. Criminalist Levels are IA, IB, II and III. Criminalist Level IV is a supervisory position. A Managerial Criminalist position is also being sought.

CRIMINALISTS
Criminalists are responsible for examining, testing and analyzing work in the chemical and/or physical analyses of evidentiary materials; prepare reports of findings; confer with experts concerning evidence and its interpretation; testify as expert witnesses on evidence in trials or hearings.  In addition, Criminalist Level IV positions will be responsible for supervising, overseeing, and acting as liaison with various District Attorneys’ Offices.

MANAGERIAL CRIMINALIST, CASE MANAGEMENT,
TRAINING AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT SECTION
Manages a professional staff engaged in evaluating the evidentiary and investigative value of evidence; training staff in scientific analyses of evidentiary material and specimens in the Controlled Substance Analysis Section, Criminalistics Section and Firearms Analysis Section, using accepted scientific methods, procedures, and techniques of laboratory analysis; and is responsible for formulating policies and procedures required for efficient operation of the Police Laboratory.  This position reviews all new technologies and methodologies and makes recommendations on laboratory operations to ensure compliance with ASCLD/LAB standards;  works closely with other Managerial Criminalists; and serves as key advisor to the Director and Deputy Director of the Police Crime Laboratory regarding prioritizing and managing casework and the professional development of laboratory personnel.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college with specialization in criminalistics, forensic science, chemistry, biology, physics, biochemistry, or a closely related scientific or engineering field.
2. For positions above 1A, baccalaureate degree and a minimum of one (1) year full time experience in criminalistics or  forensic science is required.  One (1) additional year of experience is required at each higher level, up to level IV which requires four (4) years of experience in the above areas. An approved internship in criminalistics or forensic science may be substituted for one (1) year of experience.  A master’s degree in one of the qualifying areas may be substituted for up to two (2) years of experience; or
3. A satisfactory combination of education and experience as described in “1” and “2” above.
For the Managerial position, in addition to the baccalaureate degree, four (4) years of full-time experience working in the areas described above is required, and must include eighteen (18) months of  managerial/supervisory experience.

SALARY:  Commensurate with salary history and experience.
