The Position
DPS Officers perform a variety of law enforcement and public safety functions within the Department of Public Safety including the Nevada Highway Patrol, State Fire Marshals Office, Parole and Probation, Investigations, and Capitol Police.
Incumbents possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform work independently with little or no additional training. Incumbents possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform advanced-level work and may provide work direction and training to others. Incumbents function as first-line supervisors who train, supervise and evaluate the performance of assigned staff; assign and review work; and initiate disciplinary action.
Serves as Department polygraph examiner and works with law enforcement officers from other agencies and prosecutors throughout the state. Primary duties include administering polygraph examinations for criminal cases and non-criminal cases, which include internal affairs investigations, department employment application examinations, and sex offender testing and evaluation. The incumbent may be assigned as a primary investigator or assist other investigators on criminal/non-criminal investigations being conducted by the Investigations Division. The incumbent will assist prosecutors in preparing evidence for court, provide testimony and prepare all necessary reports. The incumbent may be assigned other law enforcement related duties and functions as deemed necessary to the Division. To QualifyEducation and Experience1)Graduation as a Category I Peace Officer from a Nevada P.O.S.T. approved law enforcement academy and one year of law enforcement or experience in a police or fire agency; OR one year of experience as a DPS Officer I in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.Special Notes1)Applicant must meet current Peace Officer's Standards & Training (P.O.S.T.) requirements as established in the Nevada Revised Statutes and Nevada Administrative Code. 2)Incumbent must pass the Peace Officer's Standards & Training (P.O.S.T.) fitness test and possess the physical and mental abilities to perform the essential functions of the position as a condition of continuing employment. 3)Incumbent must meet firearms qualification/certification standards and proficiency requirements as established by agency policy. 4)Some DPS Officer II positions are granted a salary adjustment of 5% for complex investigative responsibilities or the supervision of DPS Officer II's performing complex investigations that require additional experience and expertise. These positions will be identified at the time of recruitment and are assigned to the Investigations Division, State Fire Marshals Office, and the Special Incident Response Team. Specific duties assigned to DPS Officer II positions are described in the Benchmark Descriptions5)DPS Officer II's, as a condition of continuing employment with the State Fire Marshals Office, must successfully complete the National Fire Academy's Arson Investigation course (R205) or an approved equivalent course within one year of appointment.Special Requirements1)A valid driver's license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continued employment. 2)Pursuant to NRS 284.4066, this position has been identified as affecting public safety. Persons offered employment in this position must submit to a pre-employment screening for controlled substances. 3)Working evenings, weekends, and/or holidays is required. 4)A pre-employment criminal history check and fingerprinting are required. Persons offered employment in this position will be required to pay for these items. 5)A State of Nevada/FBI background check will be required of the selected applicant. 6)Statewide travel is required. 7)This position is subject to call-out or call-back. The exam will consist of an application evaluation. It is essential that applications include extensively detailed information with time frames regarding education and experience. The most qualified applicants will be contacted by the hiring agency for interview.
NOTE: As part of the selection process, the Department of Public Safety will conduct: 1) Physical agility exam which consist of a vertical jump of 14 inches, 15 sit-ups in 1 minute, 18 push-ups (not timed), a 300-meter run in 77 seconds, and a 1.5 mile run/walk in 17 minutes and 17 seconds; 2) Extensive background investigation; 3) A urinalysis; 4) Administers a polygraph examination; 5) Require a physical examination. There are no fees charged to the applicant for the above five tests.
