Our Medical Readiness and Response Group specializes in Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear, and Explosive (CBRNE) medical and public health preparedness for military and government clients. The Epidemiologist is a full time position located on-site with a Navy medical client in Portsmouth, VA. Travel to various client locations around the world could be required on an as-needed basis. The purpose of this position is to facilitate development of an epidemiological data center that supports development of comprehensive, population-based approaches to health care delivery and health improvement within the Department of the Navy. Compensation will be based on qualifications and experience. A full benefits package will be provided. Relocation support is not available. Position Responsibilities - Conduct and/or participate in assigned technical tasks and activities with minimum of supervision, within time allocation and budget constraints. - Collection, analysis, interpretation and reporting of public health-related data. - Convert data analysis results, often from large datasets, to actionable information supporting DON disease surveillance efforts. - Masters degree level application of principles of evidence-based public health, disease surveillance, medical terminology, and biostatistics to datasets drawn from DOD and DON sources. - Develop PowerPoint presentations for senior leader briefs or science/medical conferences. - Present information, data, and study findings in formal and informal meetings to both DOD and non-DOD audiences. - Frequent application of computer skills in Microsoft ACCESS, PowerPoint, Excel, Word, and a statistical package such as SAS or SPSS. - Collaborative work in teams of health care professionals, as well as independently, to develop and implement disease surveillance, program assessment/evaluation, and medical informatics. - Data mining of existing electronic clinical data systems, such as the CHCS, NDRS, SADR/SIDR, within the large and complex Military Health System. - Employing knowledge of the Navy Preventive Medicine and public health infrastructure, including Bureau of Medicine and Surgery (BUMED), Navy and Marine Corps Public Health Center (NMPHC), Navy Medical Treatment Facility (MTF) and operational units, and supporting business processes to develop epidemiology data center recommendations. - Provide assistance in maturing and implementing epidemiologic capabilities with regard to injury, infectious disease surveillance, clinical epidemiology or force readiness. - Maintain both formal and informal communications and relationships with the Army, Navy and Air Force clients including responsibility for reports and presentations. - Achieve high technical quality in assigned projects. - Carry out project development assignments. - Plan and carry out appropriate self-development activities. - Provide input to management for staff performance evaluations as requested. Required Qualifications - Graduate of accredited graduate school; completion of Master of Public Health (or equivalent), with a concentration in Epidemiology. - Possess or have the ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret security clearance. - Possess at least one year experience applying epidemiologic methods including study design, data analysis, and results interpretation. - Possess intermediate knowledge of a statistical software application such as SAS or SPSS. - Possess intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Access and Power Point - Possess experience working with disease surveillance programs such as injury surveillance, medical event reporting surveillance, or syndromic surveillance systems like ESSENCE or BIOSENSE. - Ability to communicate clearly both orally and in writing. Preferred Qualifications - Experience establishing project/program goals and leading personnel. - Skill as a facilitator for diverse groups in a variety of educational and training settings. - Possess a DoD Secret security clearance.
