Firefighter Paramedic Trainee

The Position:

Firefighter/Paramedic Trainee is the entry-level class in the Firefighter series. Firefighter/Paramedic Trainees attend a paid San Bernardino County Fire Department Academy, which may include course work and practice in fire prevention and suppression, emergency medical training and State and local laws. Upon successful completion of the Academy, Trainees may be promoted to Firefighter/Paramedic, salary range $4,660-$5,811* per month (at least a 10% increase), and may be eligible for Firefighter I Certification within 6 months of hire. Upon promotion to the position of Firefighter/Paramedic, under general supervision of a Fire Officer, incumbents will respond to fire and other emergencies, including the protection of life and property. They will assist in the maintenance of fire apparatus, fire stations, surrounding grounds and various inspections and will perform other duties as needed. Individuals may be assigned to any Fire Station within San Bernardino County.

*Salary and medical premium subsidy percent effective July 5, 2008. Salary information includes the monthly Paramedic Pay.

 

Salary and Benefits:

·  Trainee salary range $2,603-$3,322* approx. per month.

·  Medical Premium Subsidy equal to approximately 95%* of the lowest cost high option health insurance premium.

·  Paid Vacation, Holiday and Sick Leave.

·  Uniform allowance of $450.00 per year plus an additional one time $125.00 (first year only) for Class A Uniform after successful completion of probation.

·  Dependant Care Assistance Program & Deferred Compensation Plans Available.

·  Accrued Vacation and Holiday Leave Cash Out Program.

·  Bilingual pay of $23.08 per pay period if applicable.

·  Retirement Program 3% at 50 (Non-PERS).

·  The County does not participate in the Social Security program, except for the mandatory 1.4% Medicare contribution.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

Age: Applicants must be 18 years of age or older and have graduated from high school or equivalent at time of appointment.

 

Experience/Education:

·  Must have six (6) months experience as a full-time, fully licensed and practicing Paramedic.

·  Must possess and maintain a National Registry Paramedic License -or- California State Paramedic License. Individuals certified in San Bernardino County (ICEMA) prior to employment will be given placement priority.

·  Must possess and maintain a valid class "C" Driver's License (or higher).

·  DMV Printout-Driving Record to include ticket and accident history (printed within the last six months)

· CPAT test or timed Biddle test (test must have been taken within the last twelve months). San Bernardino County Consolidated Fire District Paid Call and Limited Term Firefighter applicants must submit a current CPAT test or timed Biddle test to be eligible.

·  Must have and maintain a current CPR and ACLS Certification.

·  Biddle or CPAT (test taken within last 12 months)

·  Current National Registry or California State Paramedic License; ICEMA Accreditation if applicable

·  Current CPR Certificate

·  Current ACLS Certificate

·  Copy of valid class "C" Driver's License (or higher)

 

The Selection Process: Applicants meeting or exceeding the minimum requirements will be invited to participate in the departments written testing (which may be comprised of any or all of three components: Human Relations, Mechanical Ability and Reading) in the months immediately following the close date. A select number of applicants with top scores will then be invited to participate in a structured oral interview and paramedic assessment. Passing applicants will then start the background check process and if successful, will move on to a NFPA 1582 Physical. The San Bernardino County Fire Department Academy will follow.
