These areas of expertise will enhance the advanced capabilities of an ongoing research, development, testing and evaluation effort within the multi-disciplinary Center for Corrosion Science and Engineering (CCSE). The research performed within NRL’s CCSE is a blend of fundamental research coupled scientifically driven deliverables and applications in order to provide state of the art solutions to real world corrosion issues. To ensure successful delivery of these solutions, scientist from NRL’s CCSE often collaborate with the top industry, academic, and government researchers. Consequently, seasoned NRL researchers are often some of the most influential and recognized experts in their fields. Job and Educational Requirements: MS (Ph.D. strongly preferred) in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science & Engineering, Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Oceanographic Engineering, or Electrochemistry with emphasis in corrosion or corrosion related topics with 2+ years of corrosion related research and/or experience -- post terminal degree. Applicants with experience and education levels that differ significantly from the minimum listed here may be considered for (and directed to) other publicly available positions within the organization as deemed appropriate for that level of expertise. To be considered for a position, expertise in one or more of the following areas is required: (1) development and application of computer models to predict long term performance of materials in marine environments; (2) computation and physical analog modeling of corrosion and coatings related issues; (3) fundamental and/or applied corrosion and coatings related R&D including, crevice geometry, crevice chemistry, galvanic corrosion, cathodic disbondment, metallurgical and compositional variations; (4) failure analysis of marine materials subject to combined physical, chemical and environmental stressors including corrosion; (5) corrosion sensor development, remotes corrosion sensor arrays, and corrosion related data analysis; (6) metallurgical and processing aspects of amorphous materials, new alloys, inhibitors, plating, fabrication technology, surface treatment, annealing and machining operations; (7) passive and active cathodic protection systems engineering/research including electric isolation and electric isolation analysis for piping systems and related components; (8) bio-fouling, ennoblement or other bio-related coatings and corrosion issues including descaling, fouling removal and cleaning. Desired Skills: The preferred candidate will also have a demonstrated record of technical leadership and publications in peer reviewed journals; excellent written and oral communication skills; experience in the development of research initiatives including grant and research proposal writing for work with governmental or industrial clients; experience in experimental research involving one or more of the areas listed above. Additionally, the ideal candidate will work comfortably within a cross-disciplinary team in either leadership or supporting roles, by providing strong technical expertise and proposing new areas of scholarship.
