SAIC: From Science to Solutions™ The Homeland Protection and Preparedness Business Unit of Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) is seeking talented individuals with Materials Manufacturing experience.  These areas of expertise will enhance the advanced capabilities of an ongoing R&D effort within the multi-disciplinary Materials Science and Technology Division of the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory. All levels of expertise will be considered for open positions. The research to be performed is a blend of fundamental research coupled scientifically driven deliverables and applications in order to provide state of the art solutions to real world material science and manufacturing issues. To ensure successful delivery of these solutions, scientist from NRL often collaborate with the top industry, academic, and government researchers. Consequently, seasoned NRL researchers are often some of the most influential and recognized experts in their fields. JOB DESCRIPTION: The daily tasks involve process development, testing, and evaluation of composite materials in including: polymers, ceramics, metals and combinations thereof, for multiple functionality and purposes. Performs hands on work to complete testing related to test gear, processes, and experiments under consideration, including: experimental development, process development and improvement, design of experiment, troubleshooting, automated data logging, and other items of electro-mechanical nature deemed appropriate for the applications being tested. The majority of the work will encompass experiment/equipment set-up, troubleshooting, process documentation, test performance, procedure compliance, and data collection on numerous test conditions and material combinations. Recognizes process failures and determines the need for appropriate verification and retesting. Routinely participate in the preparation of written reports and works on assignments that are moderately complex in nature. Interaction normally involves exchange or presentation of factual information. REQUIRED EDUCATION/SKILLS: BS (MS preferred) in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science & Engineering, Process Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or Manufacturing Technology with emphasis in composite materials fabrication, development or manufacturing and 4+ years of experience after degree. SKILLS REQUIRED: To be considered for a position, expertise in one or more of the following areas is required: (1) manufacturing and development of manufacturing processes related to composite materials including: DOE, failure analysis, advanced statistical analysis, experimental set-up and scale-up; (2) statistically and/or fundamentally based process improvement of composite materials and manufacturing processes; (3) fundamental and/or applied composite materials research and product development of composite material products. Due to Government contract regulations, U.S. Citizenship is required. Additionally, ability to obtain/maintain a secret clearance with access to NRL is a condition of employment with any position described by this opportunity. The ideal candidate would have a blend of hands on manufacturing experience with polymer composite materials and laboratory research experience that includes mechanical testing and evaluation.
