Staff Scientist, Systems Genetics

Oak Ridge National Laboratory’s Biosciences Division invites applications for a Staff Scientist to develop and lead research projects in the Systems Genetics Group. The scientific mission of the group is the advancement and application of systems genetics, the systems biology of populations, using the mouse as a model organism to study complex heritable traits including the effects of environmental exposure on health and disease.

Major Duties and Responsibilities: Responsibilities will include the development of an active research program in phenotypic analysis of existing and proposed mouse populations for the purpose of determining the genetic bases of complex traits. In particular, the responsibilities will include research on the effects of low dose radiation and other environmental agents. The detrimental effects of high doses of radiation are well-known, but the physiological consequences of lower doses are poorly defined. Standard and recombinant inbred strains of mice have been used to dissect robust responses to low dose exposures from those that depend on genetic background. The Systems Genetics Group is aggressively pursuing the establishment of collaborative research programs using the facilities of the Russell Laboratory for Comparative and Functional Genomics. This includes the definitive mouse genetic reference population, the Complex Trait Consortium's Collaborative Cross. The successful candidate will be responsible for coordinating proposals to both the National Institutes of Health and the Department of Energy, jointly and separately, to support the performance of small and large projects requiring the facility capacity and technical expertise for mouse genetics experiments resident at ORNL. This position will play a major role in application of the newly developed Collaborative Cross to toxicogenomics.

Experience Education and Skills Requirements: The position requires a Ph.D. in an appropriate biological or related science and post-graduate experience. Successful candidates will have outstanding communications and interpersonal skills, and will perform effectively in a dynamic, intellectually stimulating multi-disciplinary research environment. Candidates with established publication records and funding history are of particular interest. Joint appointments with relevant departments at the nearby University of Tennessee Knoxville Campus are possible.
