State Advocacy Consultant (Flexibility in location)

We have an excellent opportunity for an Advocacy Consultant at the National Center. **If not Dallas-based, candidate will have convenient access to a major airport.Selected candidate will provide strategic consultation and training to AHA field staff and volunteers in order to support and expand the AHA's advocacy activities at the state and local level. Responsibilities including involvement with national and affiliate AHA volunteer leadership, senior management, government and not-for-profit organizations which whom the AHA might partner or network. Duties to include consulting on tobacco issues and other issues to be assigned. Assists affiliates and states in the development and implementation of state-based advocacy campaign plans/legislative priorities that are congruent with the national AHA strategic plan for Advocacy, provides strategic and technical assistance as well as support to affiliate and states to include grassroots assessments, lobbying, media advocacy, reviewing/writing testimony, reviewing lobbyist contracts, policy analysis or interpretation and other advocacy support. The selected candidate will work with other advocacy consultants to develop, adapt and/or share materials and best practices. Provides assistance on other projects as assigned by the EVP of Advocacy and VP of State Advocacy and Public Health or other staff leadership. ' Bachelor's degree in political science, public administration, health policy or related field.' Minimum of 4 years legislative experience, including direct lobbying and grassroots organizing.' Knowledge of the principals of field consultation and ability to initiate, manage, facilitate and provide support for field advocacy planning. ' Excellent interpersonal and oral/written communication skills.
