JOB DESCRIPTION
JOB TITLE: Associate Director Health Information Management
MINIMUM SPECIFICATIONS
Education/Experience:Must have a Bachelor Degree in Business or related field and seven years of healthcare management experience.Master Degree preferred.
Certification/Registration/Licensure:
Must be a Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) or Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT). Must be a Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) or Certified Coding Specialist-Physician (CCS-P) from the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA).
Skills or Special Abilities:
Must possess strong managerial, leadership and interpersonal skills. Must demonstrate strong oral and written communication skills. Must have strong skills in diplomacy, professionalism and trustworthiness. Must be able to demonstrate excellent computer skills, including word processing, spreadsheet and presentation software proficiency.
Previous experience in the development and execution of organization wide quality and productivity initiative preferred. Must be knowledgeable in multi-departmental and cross-functional project planning, project management, change management and leadership skills. Must be able to develop and maintain positive relationships with physicians from diverse backgrounds and perspectives in both inpatient and ambulatory settings. Previous experience with customer service related initiatives in a large complex organization.
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES - Coding
Oversees coding and abstracting of all PHHS accounts, including COPC, Clinic, Ancillary and Inpatient records.Manages the day-to-day coding activities and projects to ensure the coding area operates efficiently and effectively. Plans and schedules all coding activities and projects to ensure completion within established timeframes, and/or established budgets while meeting unbilled targets. Additional activities include selecting, training, motivating, supervising, monitoring and instructing assigned employees to ensure maximum utilization of individual and group capabilities. Ensures assigned employees receive opportunities to further their knowledge.Coordinates documentation and analysis of coding software and user problems to ensure timely and accurate coding, including maintenance of issues logs. Facilitates communication and resolution of issues with Clinical, Billing, IT, and Compliance Departments.Serves in a senior leadership role to HIM management to mentor and advance HIM and Management skills.Responsible for oversight of Evaluation and Management definitions, training and monitoring facility-wide.Serves as the HIM Coding liaison for Chargemaster related coding activities and has the responsibility for ensuring that accurate and timely chargemaster coding occurs. Prepares weekly unbilled status reports and communicates issues in a timely manner along with action plans required to meet unbilled targets. Coordinates coding priorities with the HIM Director and Patient Financial Services.Identifies opportunities for process improvement and develops plans to achieve process performance goals to improve effectiveness, productivity and efficiency that support the overall goals of the department and PHHS.Liaison with IT for the Encoder/Abstracting software and responsibilities for annual upgrades, system enhancements, and regulatory updates.Stays abreast of the latest developments, advancements and trends in the field of HIM by attending seminars/workshops, reading professional journals, actively participating in professional organizations, and/or maintaining certification. Integrates knowledge gained into current work practices.Maintains knowledge of applicable rules, regulations, policies, laws and guidelines that impact the HIM area. Develops effective internal controls that promote adherence to applicable state/federal laws, and the program requirements of accreditation agencies and federal, state, and private health plans. Seeks advice and guidance as necessary to ensure proper understanding.
