Thirty years later in 1952, the first pacemaker used in man was developed by the BI’s Dr. Paul Zoll. In 1965, the then New England Deaconess Hospital created one of the first coronary intensive care units in Boston, and was among the first teaching institutions to develop a fellowship in cardiovascular medicine. Dr. Ralph de la Torre, President and CEO of The Cardiovascular Institute, is a world-renowned cardiac surgeon; he pioneered a minimally invasive cardiac surgery procedure that used to require cutting through breastbone, but is now done with just a tiny keyhole incision under a patient’s arm. Today, the Institute is home to a number of high-tech diagnostic and treatment tools, including two new hybrid operating rooms, one for cardiac and one for vascular care. Do you have a desire to work in this dynamic field?  Nurses in the BIDMC Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (CVICU) care for patients who have just undergone many types of cardiac and vascular surgery, including coronary artery bypass grafts, valve replacements and repairs, and complex aortic procedures. Patients require intensive pressure monitoring, hemodynamic management, and ventilatory support. A fast-paced environment utilizing a multidisciplinary team approach manages the entire spectrum of patient and family needs.
