Performs routine and complex laboratory tests in the cytogenetics department of the clinical laboratory to provide physicians with rapid and accurate laboratory test results. Duties include: preparation of specimens for processing in the laboratory; performance of waived, moderate, and highly complex analytical process; ability to recognize human chromosome banding patterns; visual acuity and analytical skill to distinguish fine detail; manual dexterity to use common laboratory equipment and perform sterile techniques as required; initial, harvest, stain, microscopically analyze, photograph, print, karyotype and summarize analyses on blood, bone marrow, tissue, amniotic fluid and chorionic villi specimens; establishing performing and documenting quality assurance, quality control and equipment maintenance; recognizing problems and identifying causes; developing alternatives and determining solutions; confirming and verifying results through an in-depth knowledge of techniques, principles, and instruments; correlating and interpreting data based on knowledge of factors affecting test results; data handling and input; answering the telephone; other duties as assigned. EXPERIENCE PREFERRED: One to two years clinical laboratory science or equivalent. EDUCATION REQUIRED: BS in clinical laboratory science, chemistry, or biological science. Minimum curriculum for categorical applicants include: 6 semester hours of chemistry, which include at least 6 semester hours in inorganic chemistry and are acceptable toward a major in chemistry; 16 semester hours of biology which are pertinent to the medical sciences including courses in medical or pathogenic microbiology or bacteriology that are acceptable toward a major in the biological sciences; and 3 semester hours of math. PHYSICAL AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Fine motor coordination, good visual acuity including color perception, clear speech, communicate well in English, mobility and ability to work overtime.
