Chief Medical Information Officer (CMIO)
This position is directly responsible for providing clinical leadership for the development, deployment and operation of clinical information services within the University of Utah Hospitals and Clinics and its related entities. Key functions will include participating in the development, implementation, maintenance and dissemination of institutional policies and procedures relating to clinical information systems. Involves collaborating with faculty and resident physicians to determine clinical and research computing needs.
Responsibilities:
• Provide leadership in strategic vision, facilitation of goals, project development and implementation to improve clinical information systems to increase the quality, efficiency and effectiveness of patient care and research.
• Collaborate with leaders, departments, committees, entities and individuals to support the mission of Information Technology Services (ITS) in providing clinical information technology to University Health Care Hospitals and Clinics.
• Facilitate user feedback on the value and functionality of clinical information systems.
• Provide physician and allied healthcare professional training and education in ITS systems.
• Maintain continuing education to maintain a solid knowledge base in clinical information systems.
• Understand and promote regulations and policy governing clinical information systems.
• Support research involving clinical information systems, in collaboration with the Department of Biomedical Informatics.
• Serve as representation on necessary regional and national organizations and boards.
• Chair the Clinical IT Advisory Committee to identify and prioritize clinical information system and data warehousing needs.
• Provide medical oversight of clinical information systems currently in operation.
Requirements:
• Faculty appointment in the school of medicine in the department specified by board certification.
• Significant clinical experience and a strong clinical presence.
• Graduate medical degree (M.D. or D.O.).
• Physician license.
• Training or degree related to Information Systems/Technology and/or Biomedical Informatics is preferred.
• Five years of practical experience in a leadership role with the deployment and operation of clinical information systems, preferably within an academic medical center.
• Understanding of the role of Clinical Information Systems in an academic medical center.
• Extensive resourcefulness and creativity. Good judgment in the development of solutions to major problems or opportunities where precedents and principles are few.
• Effective leadership skills demonstrating decisiveness, the ability to participate in innovation and change, strategic thinking, collaboration/teamwork and problem solving.
• The ability to act independently is highly valued.
• Effective interpersonal skills, including the ability to effect collaborative alliances, promote teamwork and ensure a high degree of internal and external customer satisfaction.
• Effective organization, planning and project management abilities.
• Superior communication skills in both written and verbal presentation.
• Ability to function effectively in a fast-paced and changing environment with multiple and often competing priorities and objectives.
• System analysis, selection, integration, implementation and evaluation skills.
• Ability to foster collaboration and lead organizational change.
