SUMMARY OF POSITION DESCRIPTION:

Under direct supervision, assists in the development and implementation of therapeutic activities to promote an understanding of medical experiences, encourage recovery, and enhance the continued personal growth and development of the pediatric patient.

MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

1. Work requires advanced communication skills and/or specialized knowledge in the area of growth and development, family dynamics, play and activities, etc., acquired in a two year degree program in Child Life/Child Development or related field or equivalent experience.

2. Knowledge of general policies followed in Child Life Programs and a proficiency in performing at an assistant level normally acquired during one to three months of related experience.

3. Interpersonal skills necessary to communicate effectively with pediatric patients, parents and siblings as well as other members of the healthcare team. Ability to provide support to grieving parents.

4. Analytical skills necessary to observe and note significant patient behaviors, input to patient status and suggest appropriate activities.

5. Ability to concentrate and pay close attention to detail up to fifty percent of work time when observing and instructing patients and recording notes and observations.

6. Physical agility and high stamina required to walk and stand for up to eighty percent of work time.
